Personally, I find myself enjoying the story and characters. I've noticed my favorite fire emblem games tend to have characters that are considered pretty well-written. I'll also say the freedom of class customization is a positive of the modern FE games that you wont see in the older ones.

Would recommend Awakening, sacred stones, or 3h. Also, yeah, people were crying over nothing when it came to byleth being in the game considering there were a good few character slots left at that point
