I agree. If we are more thoughtful (hmmm, let me use a thesaurus to improve this sentence) we can lower impact. And teach our students to do so as well.

The best thing is, this teacher used to hate lesson planning... Now she looks forward to it.

Yeah, but I own the school... it's a bit different. I also have a husband who doesn't want to pull up roots and go.

No! I've done them with NotebookLM, but didn't know that Brisk does it. I'll check it out.

I get that. We're lucky to have small class sizes. However, many Ts in the US are using this model. Check out the Modern Classrooms Project. They have free courses that help Ts learn to do this.

Ss can surprise you... one of my 5th grade teachers (with an out of control class) tried this in Math. It was amazing how their behavior changed when they were empowered.

Yes! It makes the Algebra relevant & stops the "why do we have to learn this" refrain.

This is where self-paced learning journeys are incredibly helpfull. Ss who are able to work independently work on their own or in groups, freeing the teacher up to work with Ss who need extra help. In this blog post Ss talk about why they love it.

His strategies are simple tweaks that our teachers have implemented quickly & found them to be immediately effective. I use them in PD as well.

I wish we could take it a step further and get rid of siloed supjects as well. Our Ss learn so much more when they do cross-curricular projects. The transfer of concepts = deeper learning.

It takes training to do it well, but also, our classes were a max of 20 kids & on average 16 kids. Large class sizes make it much, much harder.

Have you read "Building Thinking Classrooms" by Peter Liljedahl? He believes in putting Ss in groups of 3 & gives his reasons. We've been using his 14 strategies for deeper thinking & they're effective (not just for math class)

I know this sounds like a great solution, but generally that type of grouping means the expectations for the weaker groups are low & Ss don't advance as much. I prefer mixed grouping but smaller classes.

A shout out to Sean Bennett for his engaging workshop on Engineering Design, & to the many TCFL teachers who who opened their classrooms to us, generously sharing the creative strategies they use to engage & empower their students. Your passion for teaching and learning is truly inspiring!
