This doesn’t in itself invalidate Testimony of course, and doesn’t rule out the symphonies having other ‘messages’ and motivations. But I think it does show that even if Testimony is authentic, he’s left out this sort of (fairly crucial!) information in favour of the anti-Stalin bits.

The 5th and 10th symphonies refer to women in his life. EK married Roman Karmen and the outer movements of 5 are permeated with the ‘amour’ and ‘prends garde à toi’ music from Carmen. DS said to Elmira Nazirova that her name could be a melody: E A E D A, the horn call from the 3rd movement of 10.

That’s right although obviously I want to eat another one to check. The meat is just gésiers, liver, and bacon bits. (I think the ‘cinq diamants’ refers to the address of one of their restaurants, not to the ingredients.)

The French name is gésiers. The duck version (gésiers de canard) is particularly delectable. I had no idea how magnificent such a thing could be until I lived in France for a couple of years.

Hear his old live Mahler 2 (Concertgebouw, with Ferrier). First movement is blisteringly fast. Once you hear it, everyone else is too slow. Including the later Klemperer himself.
