This @michaelwara.bsky.social piece on how climate change demands a new approach to housing in California is as true today as it was when he wrote it back in 2019. cayimby.org/blog/marin-v...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has reordered a political standoff over the state’s housing crisis with an announcement to turbocharge housing construction statewide.

California has a choice to make: Are we going to continue to stagnate or build a strong economy for the future, with enough housing to support it. I’m grateful that Governor Newsom continues to support our work & to lean in to making it easier & faster to build new homes & also to reforming CEQA.

The City of Los Angeles could largely solve its $1 billion budget shortfall by allowing more homes to be built near its transit stations, according to a new report out today from Streets For All. Read the report here: data.streetsforall.org/blog/sb79_zo...

1/ Today @gavinnewsom.bsky.social showed his commitment to tackling the delays, costs & frivolous lawsuits that make it so hard to build in CA. His proposed budget supports the strongest reforms to CEQA in decades by enacting my & @buffywicks.bsky.social’s CEQA reform bills, SB 607 & AB 609. 🧵

By championing the strongest CEQA reforms in decades, @governor.ca.gov is showing that CA is ready to meet this moment. Building housing in environmentally responsible locations will tackle our housing crisis, advance our climate goals & deliver on the promise of a government that solves problems.

Thank you @governor.ca.gov Newsom for proposing to include @buffywicks.bsky.social's AB 609 and @scottwiener.bsky.social's SB 607, exempting infill housing from CEQA, in the budget! The Governor's message today was strong:

[BILL ALERT] AB 609, which exempts infill housing from additional review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) while preserving CEQA review for planning, has passed out of Assembly Appropriations and is headed to the Assembly floor. Learn more: cayimby.org/legislation/...

We thank the Santa Monica City Council for endorsing SB 79 -- and by an almost unanimous margin!

Housing is the single largest line item in most families’ finances and we should be doing everything we can to make it more affordable.

“Liberals should be able to say: Vote for us, and we will govern the country the way we govern California!” they wrote. “Instead, conservatives are able to say: Vote for them, and they will govern the country the way they govern California!”

“When asked to name the most important issues for state leaders to be addressing this year, the cost of living, housing affordability and homelessness topped the list — far above concerns about crime and public safety, taxes and immigration, the poll found.” www.latimes.com/california/s...

U Michigan study compared 27 cities: Boston (extensive rail) has more affordable neighborhoods than Los Angeles (car-dependent). Car ownership increases transportation costs in cities with limited transit, making fewer neighborhoods truly affordable. cayimby.org/blog/how-tra...

We're thrilled to announce that AB 413, our bill with @AsmMikeFong to translate key housing resources into multiple languages, has been selected as an AAPI Caucus priority bill! aapilegcaucus.legislature.ca.gov/products/aap...

[BILL ALERT] SB 9 (2025), which clarifies and strengthens HCD’s enforcement authority over local ADU ordinances, has passed Senate Local Government and is headed to the Senate floor! Learn more: cayimby.org/legislation/...

“San Diego knows how to build housing. Now we need the will to do it — at the scale this moment demands.” www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/05/06/o...

"Los Angeles, long a symbol of California glamour and economic might, is now feeling the brunt of some of America’s biggest crises: climate change, housing shortages, fiscal uncertainty, political divisions." Bloomberg's overview of LA in 2025 puts housing at the center of the city's challenges:

U Michigan research: Walkable neighborhoods with bus service can be as affordable as areas with rail. Good bus routes and walkable streets cut transportation costs enough to make neighborhoods affordable even without train access, expanding options. cayimby.org/blog/how-tra...

2023 @circulatesd.bsky.social study found billions spent on trolley stations yielded fewer returns due to zoning limits. Rules limited housing limited near stations despite resident data showing strong preference for transit-oriented development. cayimby.org/blog/capturi...

My role at California YIMBY is planning legislation for next year. I am still laser focused on one of my pet issues, construction defect liability reform. Check out my latest in the @sandiegouniontribune.com www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/05/01/o...

We're thrilled that Asm Juan Carrillo's AB 1154, which we are co-sponsoring with Lieutenant Governer Kounalakis, has passed the Assembly and is headed to the State Senate. a39.asmdc.org/press-releas...

Put another way, when there are lots of vacant apartments, landlords have to compete with each other to attract tenants. When there are few vacant apartments, tenants compete for them. It'd be pretty extraordinary if this relationship did *not* generally hold.

2023 Circulate analysis showed San Diego streets near transit stations were designed exclusively for cars. This hostile design significantly limited pedestrian access, wasting billions in public transit investments.

[BILL ALERT] SB 79, which broadly legalizes more homes near transit stops like train stations and rapid bus stops, has passed Senate Local Government! Learn more: cayimby.org/legislation/...

We keep hearing claims that building market rate housing has never been proven to bring rents down. Yet right here is the example of Austin, where a building boom did exactly that: "rents have tumbled for 19 months." Let's do that here in California!

[BILL ALERT] AB 609, which exempts infill housing from additional review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) while preserving CEQA review for planning, has passed out of Assembly Housing! Learn more:

[BILL ALERT] AB 595, which will create a new tax credit funding source to help develop for-sale housing affordable to middle-income Californians, has passed the Assembly Housing committee. Learn more: cayimby.org/legislation/...

[BILL ALERT] AB 1061, which will make it easier to build new homes—including duplexes—in single-family neighborhoods by allowing the California HOME Act (SB 9, 2021) to be used in historic districts, has passed the Assembly Appropriations committee! Learn more: cayimby.org/legislation/...

"While we’re doing our part to increase our housing production, we can’t tackle this alone. SB 79 offers an opportunity to increase housing availability throughout the Bay Area, and other cities with good transit access and reduce costs where it most makes sense." www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news...

While California rightfully invests heavily in building rental homes for lower-income families, it does not currently support building homes for ownership. AB 595 would change that by creating a new tax credit funding source for builders who sell new homes to middle-class buyers.

[BILL ALERT] AB 1154, which will establish a single set of standards for ADUs under 500 square feet, making it easier for homeowners to add small homes to their properties, has passed the Assembly floor and is headed to the Senate! Special thanks to bill author Asm Juan Carrillo!

UCLA researchers tracked a 15% increase in California commute distances (2002-2015). Low-wage workers once lived closer to jobs, but housing costs changed that. Now their longer journeys mean more traffic, pollution, and barriers to economic mobility for those who need it most. buff.ly/ixk1WUg

Where housing is plentiful, "[t]he dignity, freedom, and stability that come with housing security become accessible to everyone. This is the future that YIMBYs want." www.thenation.com/article/soci...

UCLA study: Fewer Californians live and work in the same city – dropping from 7.5% to 6.3% (2002-2015). Rising housing costs push workers away from jobs, forcing longer commutes. For families already struggling, this means less time at home and higher transportation costs.

In the Tokyo area, rail operators derive 30-50% of revenue from ground rents of developments near their stations. Common Ground California proposes California could adopt similar approaches to create more sustainable transit funding models. buff.ly/rVa4B9U
