Good analysis, though I'd go further, Handley is a relative novice too & likely more inclined to do deals with a Farageist Mayor. Otherwise complete stasis. However Labour Govt not likely to look kindly on that. IOW we are truly *ucked if he wins esp with super low turnout & poor mandate!

Sounds like s/he is way overstaffed. I increased the staffing of the PA I chaired for 5 years but it never had more than 6 staff! 🤷 With Members allowances & staff costs ~£500k

Scrapping PCCs, whilst commendable in itself would release no resources as policing would still need a democratic oversight mechanism which costs money. The old Police Authorities which were better, arguably cost more! 🤷

Indeed as LabChair of PA always NOC required some dexterity to manage with Magistrate & Indy support & frequent accoms with other Parties to point of defying Home Office but infinitely more responsive to local feeling than 1x4 election Indys always felt dubious tho, Howard anti-democratic innovation

TBF to the 'Murikans their Supreme Court is no different simply that their legislative processes to vacate the Court's decisions are immensely more legislatively & politically complicated than UK's. Ultimately "We the people" retain sovereignty & remain the ultimate arbiter!

Parliament can of course "decide" it in any way it chooses should it so wish. The Supreme Court has merely defined the legal answers to the questions asked of Parliaments previous ramblings.

Actually, whilst as former PA chair I never supported May's intro of US-style Commissioners, nor indeed elected Mayors but for largest cities perhaps, previous Police Authority systems costs likely matched or even exceeded their salaries albeit more inclusive & locally democratic. Return to them 👍

Presumably Harvard will challenge a deprivation in Federal courts? Even I, a humble Brit, know it hosts 🇺🇸 leading Law school which has presumably educated many US judges & lawyers who may sympathise with their alma mater? 🤔 Trump University is perhaps less prestigious? 🤷
