I've been thinking a lot about the crisis of peer review - though this has been a growing problem for other reasons as well, I do think gen AI is contributing to a huge increase in number of paper submissions. And we just don't have enough reviewers, or hours in the day. Anyway here's my dystopia.

If you ran into me, @cfiesler.bsky.social or @vitak.bsky.social at #ICA25 you likely heard about the PERVADE Project and our current work assessing researcher preparedness to address data ethics issues in their work. ICA members can take the survey here: marquette.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

I've been hearing so much lately about use of LLMs for summarization. And this makes me think: So why bother writing? If you're reading a paragraph-long summary of my 20 page paper, then why didn't I just write the paragraph summary in the first place? I'd probably do a better job than the LLM.

#ICA25 I'm really looking forward to (and a little bit nervous for!) giving this year's Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture at 3pm. I hope you'll come hear about ways that the internet is good for us and bad for us at the same time, and what we can do as researchers to push towards the good. <3

Attn #ICA25 tragically I lost an earring in the Hyatt Regency. It is a very cool earring. No reward except good karma but do let me know if you find it. :)

At #ica25? Interested in data research ethics? Head over to the Grand Hyatt this morning at 10:30am for a Blue Sky hosted by myself, @michaelzimmer.bsky.social & @cfiesler.bsky.social. We'll be in the Grand Hyatt Mt Yale (Grand 3).

This video also has 50k+ views on TikTok and rising and the comments are QUITE a glimpse into public perceptions of and attitudes and misconceptions about AI.

Well this is new lol.

I've been working on something! It's not nearly done yet, but I thought no need to gatekeep the work in progress. This is an AI ethics "syllabus" based on a post-hoc curation of hundreds of short form videos I've made for social media, to make the content more accessible. bit.ly/ai-ethics-sy...

I'll be at part of #ICA2025 in Denver this week! Notably, I'm giving the Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture on Saturday at 3pm. Hope to see some of you there. :)

I'm genuinely curious to see what kind of introspection might come for some folks from a ChatGPT outage, even if it's for a short time.

I was really lucky to get an ARC of Victoria Schwab’s new book Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil. I finished it yesterday and y’all it is GOOD. Trust me, this is the queer vampire book you need in your life for pride month. (It’s out Tuesday.)

Understandably didn’t make the cut for this article but my favorite off-the-cuff comment during this interview was comparing side taking identity formation here to Team Edward, Team Jacob, and Team I Hate Twilight They Both Suck Stop Making Me Think About It.

Tip for PhD applicants reaching out to prospective advisors: Don’t use an LLM to write these emails. It’s not a great first impression to express your admiration for a recent paper the faculty member published if that paper does not exist.
