This Saturday at IRE, I’ll be talking about some of the reporting behind this story and how it was made possible with the help of Yancey County community members. @ire.org #IRE2025

As coastal areas have become far better at warning and evacuating people about hurricanes, inland communities too often remain ill prepared, with devastating results. By @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social‬, @cgaribay.bsky.social‬

Today is the 10th anniversary of the Emmanuel AME church massacre in Charleston, a racist attack that killed 9 innocent people at their Bible study. An assault like this harms so many. It also leaves us lessons to be learned, if we are willing to learn them. us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

"Caught in this culling were projects to curb stillbirths, child suicides and infant brain damage." -->the damage is unfathomable. Such important work by @anniewaldman.bsky.social @asiafields.bsky.social @ashleyclarkejourno.bsky.social @zisiga.bsky.social and photographer Bethany Mollenkof

In April, President Trump and Salvadoran President Bukele shook hands in the Oval Office to celebrate a deal to ship gang members to the notorious CECOT prison. But a new ProPublica investigation found there’s more to the story. 🧵👇

The EPA just withdrew a complaint against a major Trump donor -- GEO Group, which runs ICE detention facilities. The company was spraying a disinfectant without proper protection onto beds and into *microwaves*; detainees reported skin rashes + difficulty breathing www.propublica.org/article/epa-...

NEW: Former “We Buy Ugly Houses” franchise owner Charles Carrier agreed to plead guilty to one count of felony wire fraud that carries a potential 20-year prison sentence. The plea follows a ProPublica report detailing how Carrier bilked investors across Texas out of millions of dollars.

@invisible.institute‬ and ProPublica reviewed more than 300 sexual assault and misconduct complaints that were filed over the past decade against Chicago police officers. But experts say that’s likely an undercount. We need your help to understand the scope and scale of this issue 👇

In 2022, @propublica.org found landlords were using RealPage software to raise rents — potentially in violation of laws against collusion. Cities then moved to ban such pricing algorithms. But now, @wsj.com reports that House Republicans are seeking to “muzzle” those local efforts. THREAD

"In reviewing more than 300 sexual misconduct and assault complaints against Chicago police officers, the Invisible Institute and ProPublica found a pattern of the department failing to vigorously investigate accusations of sexual assault by officers" www.propublica.org/article/chic...

I grew up in the western foothills/southern piedmont of NC. As soon as I saw the news of Helene, I knew the devastation in these small towns just to our north was inevitable. This is the one of the best pieces of journalism I have read in recent memory. incredible, heartbreaking stories. read this.

ICYMI, a stunning story about life and death, failure and catastrophic wreckage. Hurricane Helene’s Unheard Warnings in Yancey County, North Carolina ⁦‬⁩ @jsmithrichards.bsky.social @cgaribay.bsky.social

NEW: After four months of reporting, ProPublica found that the warnings about Helene were eerily accurate. Yet, local residents remained largely unaware of the enormity of danger approaching as the storm closed in. By @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social @mrsimon22.bsky.social @cgaribay.bsky.social

I’ve lived in CA all my life. Where I live now was rebuilt after a then record-breaking fire leveled it to the ground. I've often watched fires creep closer to loved ones, frantically texting to ask if they’ve left or if they know when to go. All that to say, I think about evacuations a lot. 🧵

🧵 As hurricane season approaches, I want to tell you why I spent the past 4 months reporting this new story about Hurricane Helene. In 1999, I spent 13 hours in a car on a gridlocked interstate with my 3-week-old baby during the disastrous mass evacuation from Hurricane Floyd.

As Hurricane Helene barreled toward Yancey County in North Carolina, the predictions were grim. But there were no evacuation orders, even for the people living in homes along vulnerable rivers and creeks. Few grasped what was coming. @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social w/ @cgaribay.bsky.social

NEW: As Hurricane Helene barreled toward Yancey County in North Carolina, communities along the Cane River in the Black Mountains were particularly vulnerable. But there were no evacuation orders, and few grasped what was coming. By @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social and @cgaribay.bsky.social

Worried about 2 SpaceX Starships that exploded over British territories, the UK sent a letter Wed expressing safety concerns abt the next rocket. Late today, FAA approved Starship 9's launch anyway. It will occur at non-peak times but could disrupt 175 flights www.propublica.org/article/spac...

I have written many healthcare stories, but never before have I written about my own health. I decided to do so after learning one of my drugs costs nearly $1,000 a pill and just 25 cents to make. What I found was an incredible story of discovery and exploitation. www.propublica.org/article/revl...

A “We Buy Ugly Houses” former franchise owner is accused of orchestrating a yearslong Ponzi scheme, bilking tens of millions of dollars from investors. “It’s incalculable the amount of damage this guy did. He’s ruined some lives,” said one investor. www.propublica.org/article/home...
