So as we continue to report on Hurricane Helene’s devastation of western North Carolina, we invite locals to share: What is one thing the storm destroyed that you would have saved had you evacuated? To tell us, leave a voicemail at 828-201-2738.

While some people received a door knock and were able to scramble up hills before flooding, many didn’t have the chance to grab the belongings they cherished most — let alone evacuate. (Photo credit: Juan Diego Reyes for @propublica.org )

As we spoke to those who call Yancey home, we listened to the things people wish they could have saved — loved one’s ashes, family heirlooms, town history, precious instruments.

Despite the dire forecasts leading up to the storm, there were no evacuation orders in Yancey. So @jenniferberryhawes.bsky.social, @mrsimon22.bsky.social and I spoke to dozens of survivors and analyzed hundreds of messages from local officials to understand why. www.propublica.org/article/hurr...

Yancey County, NC, a rural mountain expanse carved with rivers and creeks, bore the brunt of Helene’s devastation, with 30 inches of rainfall over 3 days, deadly landslides, the highest recorded wind speeds, and the highest death toll per capita in the state. (Photo courtesy of Douglas Rodgers)

For the past several months, I’ve been talking to folks on the other side of the country about warnings for a different unprecedented and utterly devastating disaster —the deadliest inland hurricane on record—Hurricane Helene. propub.li/4jl3dGg

What if I was taking (a much needed) break from social media? Would the warnings reach me then?
comment in response to post
How much warning would I need to grab my medication, my glasses, my wallet, my phone, my keys, a charger? And what about the things that I can’t replace? My dog, the rosary my late aunt kept in her purse everyday, the handwritten letter my mom gave me when I moved to college.

And if you would like to share tips with us about lessons that could better prepare these communities and others for future storms, as well as how the rebuilding effort is unfolding, please email [email protected]. propub.li/4jl3dGg

Our team plans to continue reporting on Helene’s devastation of western North Carolina. We want to know: What is one thing the storm destroyed that you would have saved had you evacuated? To tell us, leave a voicemail at 828-201-2738

In my latest @propublica story w/ @cgaribay and @mrsimon22, we wanted to understand what happened in Yancey. We also wanted to understand why @NWS warnings went so largely unheard. propub.li/4jl3dGg

I spent much of the past 4 months in western NC — particularly Yancey County, a sublimely majestic place that suffered the worst per capita loss of life. It’s hard to convey the enormity of destruction there. So many survivors shared stories of incredible trauma and loss.

Many states, including my home state of SC, have dramatically improved coastal evacuations since. But when Hurricane Helene closed in on the mountains of NC, I was struck by how many people were in their homes along rivers and creeks already flooded from 2 days of prior rain.
