11/10 social media work by the Durham Bulls

I love any excuse to break out this photo

One of my all-time favourite books.

Rational conversations about car culture are hard because so many people’s default beliefs are 1) the problem is everyone else, not me; and 2) any solution that might inconvenience me in the slightest is unacceptable.

If you are a writer that does not enjoy writing, as @samthielman.com suggested, don't write. I love writing. Every time I write I feel alive, it is how I found who I was as a person. To rob yourself of this is cowardly

People always think I'm being ungenerous or misstating their views, but this is very explicitly what the "gender-critical" crowd says: Their *best case* against gender affirming care for kids is that the research says it works, but the research doesn't count. (this is from the Cass report)

I still think this is a strong contender for the funniest video ever uploaded. Absolutely unbeatable comedic rhythm

What a gorgeous first half from the Pacers. The level of play in this series has been incredible. This has been my favourite NBA Finals since the Spurs-Heat battles in 2013-2014.

The grocery store had mangoes on sale and we made mango ice cream and it rules.

Yes. I am right. I am seeing how Chat GPT is ruining students critical thinking and writing skills in real time. It is not the future. It is a tool designed to render the populace helpless, to make people doubt their innate intelligence, and to foster overreliance on technology.

This thread and quotes are a delight, as always. My Dad highlights of the year: -Taught my 15-year-old how to change a tire -Absolutely cooked a trash-talker in his 20s one night at my pickup basketball run. Scored on him with crafty old-man moves four straight possessions and blocked his shot.

Mystery and intrigue at 💯. Great stuff from @chadgalucas.bsky.social.

That post about reading books and AI that everyone is dunking on is imported from Twitter from a guy with less than 300 followers. We don't have to do this! Leave the bad takes in the bad place and enjoy a hot beverage instead, probably for less than 58 minutes!

Found another installation from our artist in residence.

Important journalism here! I was an instant combo of Kid Dad/Sports Dad. I watched most of the 2005 and 2007 NBA Finals standing while soothing babies. As a Spurs fan I then began to hope my team would win a title every year I had a kid, but sadly the trend didn't hold with kids 3&4.

Thank you, Rob!

“Common sense” is something people generally invoke when they don’t have evidence to support their arguments, or they don’t want to be bothered having to do any deep thinking about the issue.

I have this conversation almost weekly with people in my rural HRM community who complain about traffic and want to see the main road widened or a new road built while insisting that it's too impractical to take the express bus that runs along the main road.

Here's the thing about this: It isn't a boycott really. On one level I'm not travelling to the US because of moral objections, sure. But the really powerful factor for me is just a basic risk assessment. The American administration is clearly aggressively hostile to foreigners, and people like me.

I own a shirt that says “protect trans kids” but I would pay for a shirt that says “remind trans kids to do the dishes”

Booked a hotel last night, realized too late I was on a third-party site, and never got a confirmation email. So today I have to call the hotel to see if I actually have a room. I miss the days when search engines were functional and not actively trying to scam us.

If you're a billionaire and you're considering posting your opinions about how poorly you've been treated on Bluesky, try this instead: give all of your money to orphans and medical research and then walk into the forest, never to be seen or heard from again. You'll be surprised how well it works

If you like spooky Middle Grade, or know kids that like spooky MG, @maryaverling.bsky.social is a heck of a storyteller. I loved The Curse of Eelgrass Bog, and I could hardly put The Ghosts of Bitterfly Bay down this weekend. I can't wait to read what she writes next.

People in Halifax: send a quick email to the mayor and council at this address expressing your support for bike lanes (and opposition to pausing construction/design of bike lanes) by Monday.

My kids’ high school had to be evacuated in first period today because someone hit a sprinkler with a basketball in the gym and triggered the fire suppression system. I imagine the kid responsible has achieved legend status among their friend group.

This is a great list and I'm happy to see YOU OWE ME ONE, UNIVERSE included. My latest book THE VANISHED ONES is also a great read for Pride... or anytime!

My plea to parents is to take your children to libraries as much as your complicated parenting schedule can possibly allow. Help your children understand that this resource belongs to them and to the community, and that anyone attempting to take it away is stealing from them.

THREAD: I’m going to share this thread here to clearly state my perspective on electric vehicles, car dependency and better cities, for all those who frequently ask me about it, including media, elected leaders and many others. Here goes. Please share it frequently if you think it will help. 🧵#EVS
