OH "as @jessitron.bsky.social, my boss would say, the ultimate root cause of every incident is, inevitably, capitalism" ~ Martin Thwaites (with @olane.bsky.social and coworker, at @honeycomb.io o11y days London)

Oh yeah... You can get a "nines don't matter" or "test in prod or live a lie" or "if you liked it then you should have put an SLO on it" t-shirt or hoodie at my old bonfire shop, lol. www.bonfire.com/store/mipsyt...

Apropos of absolutely nothing, the only technical leader who I am just a plain die-hard fan of at this point is @charity.wtf Have even met her IRL several times, and she just never disappoints. Everyone I work with has been forced to read her blogs.

Just got the best package of stickers from @charity.wtf. I’m going to need a bigger laptop.

This post by @charity.wtf really hits the mark: like how some indie kids think all bands on majors suck, some self-taught folks think that degrees = mediocrity Here's the #o11y comp: using education as a heuristic for competency is like using low level metrics for system health. Correlation is weak

AI coding assistants: sometimes a total time-saver, other times a weird little chaos machine. Where’s the line? My piece for @infoworld.bsky.social is all about when to actually use these tools (and when they’ll just make things worse). www.infoworld.com/article/3973...

Hey folks, quick/odd request.. if you *recently* read "Observability Engineering" and are up for a quick 15 min phone chat, within the next 6 hr, drop me a DM? I am refactoring the chapter list (due @ noon Friday) and could use some fresh eyes on chapters to add/drop for 2nd edition. 🙏🥰 Thanks!

My third weekly niblet is up! This week our topic is "On Pronouns, Policies and Mandates". charity.wtf/2025/05/02/o... It talks about why I support pronoun disclosures, and normalizing the practice of sharing pronouns, but hate mandates and pressure to share. (And why I personally don't.)

I don't know who needs to see this, as the saying goes, but platform engineering is not just "devops" or "infra" by another name. Platform engineering is about bringing a product sensibility and design ethos to the infra-shaped technical problem space.

Once upon a time, I believed that getting a CS degree was highly correlated with being a mediocre engineer; the REAL stars were dropouts and liberal arts majors. (And other adventures in self-justifying heuristics ☺️) charity.wtf/2025/04/28/o...

The best customers are ones that make your product better. Huge thanks to the @honeycomb.io team for co-designing new PagerDuty insights with us! Special shout-outs to @ferd.ca and @another-engineer.bsky.social in particular. 🙏

The second half of my update on observability costs is now up! Part two is on technical cost drivers and levers of control, both model specific (multiple pillars model vs o11y 2.0) and model-agnostic -- telemetry pipelines, open source, etc. www.honeycomb.io/blog/how-muc...

SRECon Americas videos are up, which means you can watch the closing plenary @charity.wtf and I gave—an open letter to AIOps vendors if they are to write better tools. It also turns into an open letter to SREs, because we don't expect vendors to all listen to us. www.usenix.org/conference/s...

Holy shit, @irvingpop.bsky.social just wrote the best piece I've seen yet on the convergence of observability engineering teams + data engineering tools and techniques. Go go go -- don't miss this one.🔥 www.honeycomb.io/blog/data-st...

I have an answer for this now! I've come to think of MCP as a presentation layer, more like HTML than JSON. Both MCP tools and the results returned should be useful when shoved into an LLM's context window. You're kind of making a weird website specifically for LLMs.

So..I consider myself a capitalist, more or less. I grew up dirt poor, & I have no patience for people who wax sentimental about prelapsarian bliss. Before we learned to channel our animal spirits into competition, your options were a) poverty or b) pillaging. But this predatory shit is pure evil.

another banger by @charity.wtf "When everyone is looking at a different view of reality, that's what creates silos."

I hereby commit to writing ✨one short piece per week✨, for the next three months, to try and reset my relationship with writing in this brave new post-social media landscape. I write more about this, and the many jobs Twitter once did for me, in this post. charity.wtf/2025/04/19/o...
