Then, once the drones reach their target area, many of them plunge downward at a steep angle that makes it difficult to shoot them down. They used to fly low and slow. Upgrades have allowed them to fly faster, at greater altitudes, and carry larger warheads.

Russia’s military is also employing new tactics, flying its drones higher than much of Ukraine’s small air defenses can reach, stretching Kyiv’s more limited resources and forcing difficult decisions over which drones and missiles to try to shoot down.

Russia’s air strikes ramped up in past weeks, each attack bigger and lasting longer than in previous months. Russia used to launch 100+ Iran-designed drones at Ukraine but now it’s launching 300+ and 400+ as production increases. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia fired 472 missiles + drones overnight.

The latest attack came hours after Trump said Russia should be allowed back in the G8 and that he would not impose new sanctions on Moscow, despite pressure from G7 allies and members of the US Congress, including many Republicans. Trump has said he Putin may be “tapping him along.”
