I've read - and this makes sense - that they're often a first step to phishing schemes. If you respond in any way, you verify the number does in fact go to a real person that can/will respond.

As an economist that often goes to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, etc. for data, I'm now constantly on the lookout for when either reporting evaporates or starts to appear untrustworthy.

Oops. I came here looking for the Mark Harmon/Jodie Foster movie.

I believe this is 100% correct. Peaceful protest does not equal acquiescence.

Back in college, I was staunchly against term limits until a summer internship exposed me to dozens of Congressional and Senate hearings. Ever since, I have been staunchly pro-term limits.

Guess they have to re-tune their AI bots.

"... the jokes he tended to pick often seemed a little lazy." Ironically, I believe the writer here is the one being lazy. Too lazy to even look into Jost's role as a very accomplished writer at SNL for twenty years - aside from his Update job. And too lazy to look beyond his own predispositions.

Until now, I had no idea that there was a stand-up version of the game.

I finally figured out who (or whose impression) Bessent reminds me of.

Unfortunately, ICE is NOT a rogue federal agency. That would suggest that ICE is acting outside the federal government's intentions. The people currently at the head of the federal government want and encourage this.

Does any NFL owner have business pending at the DOJ or FTC? Might be a good opportunity.

Yes. Hindsight is always 20/20, and you can always look back at what was faulty - and possibly predictable to some extent. But it was always a slow burn - until now - when EVERY semi-intelligent (and honest) person knows this is a disastrous move going in.

Just wait for his piece praising Trump’s tariff “plan” to ingeniously reset the global economy.

And now we know you don't even have to be Venezuelan.

All the replies I've read focus on McAfee, Barstool and other media types who are truly reprehensible. What is truly disheartening is that there are so many people out there who listen to this garbage THEN ACT ON IT, attacking this young woman any way they can.

The problem was not that Goldberg was somehow "accidentally" invited. The problem is that this exchange never should have been on ANY third-party app to begin with. That is the scandal and danger. Thank God that Goldberg was somehow invited so that this could be brought to light.
comment in response to post
I'm sure Signal, or some other app, would have been illegally used to conduct govt business (confidential or otherwise) no matter who was confirmed as Sec of Defense (that Trump would nominate). It's actually fortunate that these particular folks were incompetent enough to bring the issue to light.

The part about him be a horrible human being and pathological liar, what exactly is a "fake sign?"

Do yourself a favor and lookup "Norm MacDonald alien autopsy playboy" on YouTube. A great joke along these lines from Norm MacDonald. There's also an origin story of the joke by Jim Downey on the Conan O'Brien podcast. Well worth the time/view.

Hopefully, this doesn't draw the attention of the MAGA wing of the DOJ back in DC. Jenkins seems like the type of guy they'd offer interference for.

So, the plan now is to use the commission set up to protect against unlawful discrimination as a tool to root out practices in place for the prevention unlawful discrimination.

Nah. Look at the left sleeve. Looks like he's wearing a long-sleeve buttondown shirt.

Trump being a great business man and Elon being the smartest man on Earth are the two most maddening and nonsensical enduring myths going.
comment in response to post
Between Trump’s latest EO and this… no, there’s no similarity between MAGA and the Nazi ethos.

So, he's saying that USA's democracy wasn't very strong to begin with. Or at least that's what he's counting on.

I'm sure a similar letter is being drafted (if not already sent) covering the entire DOJ. What did the ABA expect after explicitly advocating for the rule of law? The nerve.

But the message is sent for all FTC staff.

Great tie though. Where's it from? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks for pointing that out. Now I both have to follow him and find out where to get that tie.

I was taking an eighth-grade history test when the chemistry teacher interrupted to tell us.

Huh? I never even thought of that. The Eagles are the only NFC East team to NOT beat the Bills in the Super Bowl.

Does Trump answer with full pardons for them?

Trump looks absolutely miserable, Melania angry, and Vance disinterested.

I don't think domestic counterterrorism is going to be much of an ongoing concern the next few years.
comment in response to post
This is definitely the sort of move the DOJ would challenge. Oh wait. Never mind. I'm thinking about regard for laws. I'm being silly.

I visited the R&R HOF in Cleveland about 20 years ago. I think I agree with most of Tom's opinion, but the physical structure itself (as a museum) was a pretty cool experience.

Please don’t do this. Voting machines aren’t linked to the Internet or even across a given county. Any hacking would have to be done manually at each of the thousands upon thousands of voting precincts in the US. Our elections are the most secure in that way.

But at least those movies were self-aware enough to show that racism=bad, at least with Trading Places. (Nolte's cop was pretty rough around the edges, to say the least.)

Did the folks asking if he read the NYT piece actually read it objectively? "Confirming Mr. Barnes’s account is problematic after so much time." Mr. Barnes is apparently relaying a story from his former boss about a trip Barnes was on but new nothing about at the time.
comment in response to post
"Mr. Connally did not figure in those investigations. His involvement, as described by Mr. Barnes, adds a new understanding to what may have happened in that hard-fought, pivotal election year." Oh, what MAY have happened. Seems ironclad.

They won't. I'm sure most are expected to die in the trenches. The lucky ones will probably end up in Siberia.
