Once, the UK’s position in these graphs would have been unthinkable. Obviously we are nowhere near the disaster hitting US universities but our hostility to international students has been heading the same direction. Sooner (most likely) or later it will have catastrophic consequences

The fascist win if you lose your compassion for other people. That's part of the war. You have to keep compassion.

Triangulating from “trans women are women” to appease transphobes until you land at the exciting new position: “no women are women.”

Who’d have thought that illiberal decisions would have misogynist consequences (answer: everyone who said transphobia is no basis for policy)

In countries where abortion is criminalised pregnancy losses can be the trigger for major police harassment and incarceration. It’s getting worse in the UK:

UPDATE: OPEN LETTER - HISTORIANS FOR TRANS RIGHTS In just 10 days, over 700 historians signed to demand MPs stand up for trans rights. I'll send the emails to MPs tomorrow, so you have until 5pm GMT *today* to sign + share. Thank you all 🏳️‍⚧️🫂🏳️‍⚧️ Letter: tinyurl.com/879vuver Sign: tinyurl.com/4p7wktrn

Enjoyed this in today’s oxford clarion @oxfordclarion.bsky.social

Voted 🗳️

I completely missed this excellent @mashagessen.bsky.social piece it takes a position that many of us on the faculty of wealthy universities wish our employers would adopt namely, that the intellectual goals of a university are a public good and must outweigh its financial goals

It’s sad that people think so little of feminist scholarship that transparently unfeminist ideas are being touted as the latest “thinking” eg women should look prettier, should be defined exclusively by biology etc. it would be funny if it weren’t so gross

Thanks to support from the trans community and its allies we are now advertising for a full time equalities solicitor. Trans people know they are at the thin end of fascism. If you're a lawyer, here's how you help them fight back. goodlawproject.org/vacancy/seni...

👨‍⚖️ The UK Supreme Court just redefined what a lesbian is 🧵👇

The public attacks on “gender ideology” have always been part of a coordinated strategy to erase trans people, deny abortion, end marriage equality, limit sex education, etc. There’s no “compromise” with such politics. We will only ensure our freedoms by rejecting authoritarianism, unapologetically.

Trying to define a woman biologically is uncomfortably reminiscent of trying to define whiteness biologically

My husband has taught human reproduction and development to the Cambridge medics for over three decades. When people start banging on about "only two biological sexes" he starts with "which sex: genetic, hormonal, or gonadal"? Biological sex is not binary. www.scientificamerican.com/article/sex-...

News: Diana Greene Foster, the MacArthur-winning author of the Turnaway Study, learned her NIH grant — funding a multi-year study on Dobbs' impact — has been pulled. She was told its bc the govt won't study "gender identity." Her work has shaped our understanding of abortion bans' consequences.

A mentor of mine used to say that you pray to fortify the fighter not to influence the direction of the fight. I think of this daily. A lot of what we do in this life is to fortify ourselves to keep going uncertain of the outcomes of our actions. We keep on.

The time for her to run these arguments was before she was convicted. Why is the Guardian lining up alongside the anti-abortionists? www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

Really excelling in incompetence. The best! www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Who could have predicted this other than everyone

Wow looks like capitulation not the best strategy after all

Virtually every Cybertruck — those freaky Tesla vehicles made to look like aggression incarnate – has been recalled, because, literally, they come unglued. What a metaphor for this regime: a weak vehicle trying to look tough, a victim of its own cheapness, an ugly toy falling apart.

For staff at @greenpeace.org, and those of us who rely on it to spearhead the fight against climate breakdown, this verdict is a disaster. The, as I experience it, systematic dismantling of civil society opposition to a corporate takeover of the State is genuinely terrifying.

Remember folks. The only truly safe investment is training yourself to find joy in art, literature, music, history, philosophy, conversation and so on.

I recently read a book with a "disaknowledgements" section, one of the best and bravest things I've ever read. We need to publicly call out people who bully and abuse people in academia.

This is a horrific story AND helps us think about the treatment meted out to those not in possession of a German passport whose experiences we rarely hear about

Reminder: we are being trained not to care about other people. It underlines the attacks on migrants, on DEI, on trans youth, on so-called "wokeness." Sure there are legitimate critiques but this is not about critiques. It's about supercharging capitalism's culture of uncare.

This episode reminds me of when the popline database (run out of Johns Hopkins) was set so that it returned zero hits when you searched “abortion” #reprosky

This is also generally how you exclude minorities and women from “serious discussions” BTW - pick on something ridiculous and irrelevant (esp clothes, hair) and make it the entire basis for a character assassination pile on

the idea of professors working so assiduously to get students deported just is wild. Deportation is a black mark on your immigration history, and its very difficult to move at all after deportation. They are destroying these young people's lives, and its all done with such self righteous glee.

German tourist held indefinitely in San Diego area immigrant detention facility It is not safe for ANYONE to visit the US right now! www.kpbs.org/news/border-...

www.itg.be/en/health-st... look, Demographic Health surveys are unwieldy & old school & some of the questions- in my work- are terribly worded… but as imperfect as they are, they’re an important source of health data globally (& often the best quant data available).

Terrific example of how US health is intertwined w/ the rest of the globe. "Seasonal flu vaccines need to be updated each year bc the virus changes so frequently. But the US hasn't contributed its information on what's spreading there since Jan., a World Health Organization (WHO) official said."🛟🧪

🚨NEW 🚨 On 22 January, GB News presenter Josh Howie repeated a homophobic slur linking the LGBTQ+ community to paedophilia. This is offensive, wrong and unlawful. Join us in writing a complaint to Ofcom to force them to take action 👇 t.co/3b5UH9zuOR

Global Health: Science and Practice (GHSP) is (was?) an important open access journal run with USAID funding. I’ve published in it and know many on the wonderful Editorial staff. They are also victims here, which many responses to this post are clearly missing. Please stop adding insult to injury.
