We should all just be grateful that we never got to see DDayL as Bono

He also introduced me to Jimmy Buffet’s ‘Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw’ when I was entirely too young, but like many dads, his judgment was not always the best.

Monty Python for me as well. I don’t know if there was a ‘right’ age for Monty Python - obviously I didn’t get everything at age 6 or whenever he introduced it - but totally informed my sense of humor, prepared me for The Simpsons, and made my heart hurt when Graham died and when John became gross

I had a boss (in New Jersey) who once suggested I take the train from Sacramento to LA, give a presentation and then take the train home - all in the same day. People on the east coast think everything is less than two hours away from everything else.

Tom wants you to believe that there is a platonic ideal form of protest that the GOP can’t make a story out of. The same GOP who can dominate the news cycle for three days when a black president wears a tan suit. Just because there is an outrage machine doesn’t mean that everything is an outrage

The federal government should simply have formed an MS-14 and the problem would have taken care of itself

Lord knows an administration that photoshops gang tattoos onto a guy they’ve blacked bagged to El Salvador couldn’t possibly manufacture a pretext with a 100% peaceful protest.

I died and retried a section of one level at least 50 times and kept coming back because this game is sooooo fun. For me, it has totally supplanted Oblivion, which was essentially ruined very early on when I came down with a bad case of vampirism.

Thanks for posting this. Saw one the other day and thought ‘oh, a car that is clearly biting the Porsche Cayenne’s style, which I on the other hand might be able to afford.’ Clearly I have to stick with my original plan of selling a kidney to get the Porsche.

After being peripherally aware of the band via the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, but being similarly gunshy about diving in, Seasons in the Abyss was my on-ramp. 35 years later and they’re the only one of the Big 4 who still mean anything to me, for all the reasons you describe. Thanks for this!

My thing for today is apps and OS’s that remember your passwords so you don’t have to except in the immediate instance when Touch ID or Face ID just decides to stop working, forcing you to try to recall a password you were assured you didn’t need to remember while you’re standing at point of sale

I have to imagine there’s some expanded universe story about why stormtrooper armor is weaker than paper mache. Doesn’t matter what you shoot them with or where you hit them, it’s one shot and then on to the next one.

The ending of A Farewell to Arms punched me in the gut, hard. I didn’t read it until college so I’m sure there were other things I read as a kid that messed me up, but A Farewell to Arms is always the first thing I think of.

And at the same time, this is the inverse Shoot Your Shot of Kevin James in Hitch. There’s earnestly tripping and fumbling your way through your first encounter and then there’s dropping the hammer from the top rope because you are blessed with natural gifts, confidence and sense of self.
