See now I'm a bit like Omar, I disqualify mocks with trades. I do like several of those players tho.

I try and post on both but there are some annoying incompatibilities with respect to post size so when I'm doing something longer-form it usually ends up on X and if I want to double-post it here, it takes a lot of time to work it down into bite-sized posts for a full thread.

There's a difference between taking one major injury versus being a guy who is injured every year.

No. Not with his injury history. Not at this price. You either want to be able to field a team in January or you want to be able to field a team in March. They're not the same thing.

He's not an OL but yeah he does. I'd take on injury risk in the form of James Daniels and Dre Greenlaw.
I'd also take on Will Fries but I was told his market was going to be hot. If it's not, I'd be in.

Excellent opportunity for him and yeah, no way would I be anywhere close to that price.

I was told his market was going to be hot, so I cooled on him. If that's not true after all, then I am absolutely in on him and have been for months.

The only injury case I'd be looking to take on personally would be James Daniels. I don't know where he's at in terms of his Achilles recovery and it could very well be he's not even ready to sign anywhere. But he's a true swing for the fences, particularly in Miami's system.

Or you could go the age route. What about aged veterans like Brandon Scherff and Kevin Zeitler? The hot market doesn't necessarily apply to guys 32+ years of age and contract values can drop precipitously when a player is showing a certain date of birth. Could Miami take advantage of this?

I've talked about Matt Pryor some. He's less interesting to me as a Guard, where teams have played him more often than not. I think he could be an inexpensive tackle option for Miami.
And what of Trystan Colon who was a Center all thru college but has shown some ability to play Guard?

Center Coleman Shelton was let go by the Bears, upgrading to Drew Dalman. Shelton played in the Rams system, similar to Miami's. Could he play RG?
What about Andre James, let go by the Raiders? He's spent his entire career at Center but he was a LT/RT at UCLA. Could he be moved to Guard?

What I think you have to be wary about are two other strategies employed by teams to try and get under-valued players...and those are taking advantage of prices that are temporarily depressed by injuries and/or character problems. Unfortunately Miami has done some of that and it's not worked out.

CB Ugo Amadi (27) - Versatile, albeit small. Was a high impact safety for Oregon and has found a home in the NFL as a slot defender. He has had trouble staying healthy, and at this point would be considered a very low-level signing to compete for backup positioning behind Kader Kohou.

CB Daryl Worley (30) - Veteran of Weaver's defense in Baltimore who played both CB and S in their 3-Safety personnel packages. He won't command more than the veteran's minimum in all likelihood, but he may be a versatile, stabilizing presence as Anthony Weaver continues to install his defense.

S Justin Reid (28) - Reluctant to put Reid here only because he will probably command a serious contract in this market. But Reid's athletic and consistent presence in Steve Spagnuolo's dominant defense could be tempting for Miami even at a headliner's price tag.

S Marcus Williams (28) - Williams was a staple at safety in the Baltimore defenses while Anthony Weaver was there. Expected to be released by Baltimore, tough to imagine he physically fell off a cliff at only 28 years old. Could be a signing you don’t want to out-think yourself on.

S Jason Pinnock (25) - High potential at an affordable price. Was at his best with Giants under Don Martindale, who was Anthony Weaver's first defensive coordinator when he re-joined Baltimore. Pinnock is at his best being used in multiple ways, which he didn’t get under new DC Shane Bowen.

LB Willie Gay (27) - Ultra athletic play-maker who made an impact in Kansas City, which won two Super Bowls with him as a primary starter. His fall from grace is difficult to explain, but he is unlikely to command even a mid-level contract. Could make an impact in Miami's system.

LB Dre Greenlaw (27) - Like James Daniels, a swing for the fences. Tore his Achilles a year ago. When the Ravens defense was hottest, it leaned on Roquan Smith & Patrick Queen stopping the run and getting deep in coverage. A high-level starter next to Jordyn Brooks could make a huge impact in Miami.

SAM Dennis Gardeck (30) - A smallish EDGE at 6'1" & 232 lbs., but surprisingly good all-around football player who can play the run, rush the passer, and drop into coverage. Could play a versatile role in Weaver's defense similar to the one previously occupied by Malik Harrison in Baltimore.

SAM Malik Harrison (27) - Unique player who played an EDGE position in Baltimore's defense, but dropped into coverage more often than pass rush. Anthony Weaver could look to reunite with and use a player like Harrison against some personnel groupings.

ED Tanoh Kpassagnon (30) - Lengthy 6'7" & 289 lbs. EDGE with a 7 foot wing span who can be would play tight to the formation and defend the run to balance out the other players in Miami's EDGE unit at a price that should not get much (if at all) north of the veteran's minimum. Low-level signing.
comment in response to
post
ED Michael Hoecht (27) - Unique OLB at 6'4" & 310 lbs. who even played a bit off-ball. Can be a force against the run, able to be lined up tighter to the formation, which would help balance out Chop, Jaelan, and Chubb in Miami's EDGE unit. The bidding will have to be monitored.

DL Grady Jarrett (31) - just released. Always been a high activity DT, which fits Miami’s style. Calais Campbell’s veteran eyes and savvy made a huge difference for Miami a year ago and Jarrett would bring that to the table. He’s averaged 750+ snaps the last 9 seasons, generally a model of health.

DL Jerry Tillery (28) - Played 500 snaps on an elite defense. Had a tough time finding his role w/ Chargers, but has done better in Vegas and Minnesota. Great size (6'7" & 305 lbs.) and athleticism. Activity level, penetrating gaps, moving laterally, getting off blocks, good fits for Miami's style.

DL John Cominsky (29) - Tall (6'6" & 290 lbs.) and athletic (ran 4.69). He does his best work moving laterally and giving chase, as opposed to being isolated on an individual OL in forward combat. Can fill a similar role in Anthony Weaver's defense as Brent Urban did in Baltimore. Should be cheap.

post
DL Sebastian Joseph-Day (29) - Good size (6'3" & 305 lbs.) and an excellent athlete. He thrives in a defensive front style that is very active with stunts and twists, and he has the savvy to get off blocks. Should be relatively inexpensive.

NT Tedarrell Slaton (27) - Massive 6'5" & 340 lbs. DL who shows good energy and ability to get off blocks. Can fill the role in Miami's defense previously occupied by Benito Jones. Will have to watch the bidding on him as it could get out of Miami’s range.

OT Matt Pryor (30) - Very large (6'7" & 332 lbs. with 7'1" wing span) player who keeps being misplayed at Guard during his career but in 2023 the 49ers made him a backup tackle, and that's where his tape shines best. Another good model of health for a line that hasn't had many of those recently.
comment in response to
post
OL Patrick Mekari (27) - Rare 5-tool lineman who has logged 900+ snaps at Center, 1200+ snaps at Guard, and 1900 snaps at Tackle. Most recently played Left Guard, but tough to say what his best position would be in Miami. Another model of health, he'd be a good toughness import from the Ravens.

LG Evan Brown (28) - Heady, aware player who happens to be a good athlete. Plus in pass protection, particularly picking up on stunts and blitzes. He would be a very helpful presence next to a young Left Tackle Patrick Paul. Does a lot of little things well. Has spent most of his career at Center.
