So I kinda know the answer to this. Sight word learning came into vogue at the end of the Clinton presidency and admin pushed it. Bush II reverted to phonics and it got associated with NCLB even though phonics work.

Like yes I use code assists at this point. But I really just treat it as the world’s best autocomplete. I stop, I ask if that’s actually what I want, and I sure as fuck don’t commit code where I don’t understand why something works.
