In related news, my 100% real book, Crisis Averted, would go great on nonfiction summer book lists! www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/704843...

When your job is to recommend books, and actually reading the books is not even in your top 3 ideas...

I saved my wife's life recently (she was choking on steak tips on Patriot's Day near Fenway, which we both recognize would have been the most ironically Boston way to go). I realized after if I had never had training, I wouldn't have been able to do it. These videos are great. Watch and share them.

Can you spot someone who is drowning? Use an AED with confidence or treat severe bleeding? Each year, I share a series of short videos to help refresh important first aid skills. The whole series can be reviewed on a coffee break. caitlinrivers.substack.com/p/how-to-sav...

This feels like a "spot the logical fallacy" quiz. Low uptake--one of the major justifications given for this change--is not and should not be a criteria for vaccine approvals.

I have a NYT essay out this morning. There is very little that Americans can agree on these days. Not religion, not sports, and certainly not politics. But there is one thing nearly everyone agrees on: Vaccines are good. (Gift link) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/o...

I will be writing emails to the government affairs leads of the patient groups that represent my family urging them to go all-in on advocacy and community organizing.

Every single patient advocacy group hoping for new treatments should be on blast. Medical progress is on the line.

An astronomy professor colleague of mine once relayed trying to explain to his students why it was important that they actually write their class reports themselves. “The point is not to teach ME about neutron stars,” he said.

How will the Trump Administration handle the next public health emergency? A lot will fall to state and local governments, and individuals. I have some ideas for how to make that successful. caitlinrivers.substack.com/p/what-will-...

I joined Ari Shapiro of NPR to discuss the measles outbreak, my book Crisis Averted, and why smallpox eradication is one of humanity's greatest achievements. www.npr.org/2025/04/08/1...

ICYMI yesterday: The US has enjoyed decades in which #measles deaths have been very low. But the country may be on a different trajectory now, experts fear. www.statnews.com/2025/04/06/m...

Prize-based research funding is the worst. Teams must complete the work for free, which is impossible while on soft money.

Mpox Clade I emerged in 2023 in South Kivu and since has spread sustained through direct human to human contact. Controlling this outbreak has turned out to be a major challenge. Through embedded outbreak research coupled with a local capacity building program, we first....

Delighted to discover that my latest op-ed made the Sunday paper. Recent talking points have H5N1 down as mild. I'm not so sure. If there is one thing I've learned in my time as an epidemiologist, it's that viruses love to surprise.

I'd like to tell you a story about a scientist you may not have heard of, but who shaped a lot of modern health research... 🧵

The contempt is hard to stomach. University research is not a hobby. It's work--work our country values as important to improving Americans' health, contributing to the economy, maintaining scientific supremacy. 'Entitlement' sure hits wrong.

Wonderful choice! Dr. Monarez is a respected scientist and an experienced government leader.

This was a fun one! I shared thoughts on how the general public can help people with LC: "ask what you can do to help them... Being that person that someone can rely on in the absence of broader societal support can make a world of difference." www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/03/17/a... 1/2

We went from a highly transparent system around vaccines to a closed one. The opposite of 'radical transparency' and giving people information to make their own decisions.

Nothing will kill more children than the ongoing decimation of CDC, NIH, and USAID work to lift vaccine uptake in the US and world. Child survival rose 75% in the last 50 years. Vaccines account for 40% of that. Measles vax alone was 60% of the benefit. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

We’re getting there. Flu season continues to drop, but we had such a high peak this year that it’s a long way before we’re out of the woods. Covid-19 and RSV are fine. Norovirus continues to haunt. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Today's trucks are so big they could run over an adult without noticing. Can't wait for this trend to fade.

A commitment to radical transparency does not square with cancelling ACIP and VRBPAC meetings, which are independent experts advising the gov on vaccines. Proceedings are streamed, all data and materials posted online. Cutting off outside advice and public deliberations is not trustworthy.

I'm about halfway through @carlzimmer.com 's new book Air-Borne and it's a delight! I love books that look to history to help us understand the present (esp public health history) and this book does that so well. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/724793...

Just yesterday while on PBS News Hour I said that I will have confidence that federal vaccine policy is uncompromised as long as the external advisory committees continue to meet. Now meetings for both VRBPAC and ACIP have been cancelled. I don't like this.

It's good the administration is taking H5N1 in poultry seriously. Similar measures are needed for dairy farmers. (Eradication of bird flu is not possible, I wish they would not use that word.) www.wsj.com/opinion/agri...

As Texas reports its first measles death from the current outbreak, here's our look at the challenge of the outbreak there and questions about how to deal with vaccine hesitancy, including suggestions from @cmyeaton.bsky.social @pbsnews.org www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...

I joined PBS News Hour to discuss the measles outbreak in Texas and vaccine hesitancy. My comments build on a point I made in a NYT essay: vaccine hesitancy and resulting outbreaks are a serious problem. But we should also remember that vaccines are popular, actually! www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...

I think we're finally past peak for this year's long and intense flu season. Morew news you can use here. ⬇️ caitlinrivers.substack.com/p/outbreak-o...

Those who suggest that victims of vaccine preventable diseases are deserving of it will be insta-blocked. Most cases are children. And both kids and adults could be unvaccinated because of lack of access, misinformation, contraindications. Public health is not about leaving anyone behind.
