I'm also very interested in the evidence though. It is hard to come by because our society is so terrible at prioritizing science and research right now

When I first heard this correlation I was like "hmm, that tracks". If it turns out to be partially due to closeted folks, I'd believe that, but I imagine it more likely to be related to genetics and/or brain development impacting both. I can certainly say my experience agrees with the correlation.
