A little journey for you today about snakes 🐍. Scroll down through 8 images for the whole story. #SnakeEducation #Snakes #SnakeHeroes

ABC news online piece about how our snake-handling course and education efforts are debunking persistent snake myths and combating snake misinformation. #SnakesOfOz #VenomousSnakes #Snakes #SnakeEducation #HumanSnakeConflict www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...

For anyone interested, we at the Australian Reptile Academy will feature tomorrow (18May’25) on ABC’s Landline show at 12:30p on ABC TV and thereafter on ABC iView.

My recent interview on ABC’s Lab Notes podcast about a newly developed snake antivenom: www.abc.net.au/listen/progr... #snakes #scicomm #antivenom #snakebite #envenomation

My article in @theconversation.com today w/ @tnwjackson.bsky.social discusses progress on a new antivenom for snakebite. A topic that needs ⬆️ resources, research, & gov’t commitments, esp in India, & sub-Saharan Africa where the burden of snakebite is severe. theconversation.com/super-antibo...

This habitat garden is looking stunning this morning. Agreed? #Brisbane #ReWildSuburbia #NoLawn

Rewilding channelised creeks yield return on investment on many levels: social, biological, ecological, and flood control. Does your area need a change like this? Write to your government officials and make your voice heard. Let’s spread the word. www.abc.net.au/gardening/ho...

100% fan-girled Prof David Lindenmayer today at his compelling Forest Wars lecture in #Brisbane City Hall today. Highly recommend his book about all the 42 YEARS of impressive science that debunks myriad myths about bio-harmful, fire-worsening, economically-failed native forest logging in Australia

Note the ancient tree. We are losing these across huge areas of Australia at an alarming rate. These irreplaceable, keystone ecological structures support 300-400 species in Australia. Most endangered species require such hollows for homes. Failure in funding for mngmt & research urgently needed.

This tree burned to ash. Palmies need a threatened species recovery plan & funding for better fire regimes. Solution: $ for 1st Nations for proper fire regimes & $ for conservation research to track/ensure positive progress. Saving a species is a choice. www.peopleforwildlife.org/theapudthama...

Finally, at lease *some* meaningful federal budget funding for nature in Australia! $250M just announced- a good start, and should help us reach #30by30 targets, but far from the $5B the sector determined is required to stop extinctions and ecosystem collapses. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...

Day 1 of 2, filming today with the ABC for the TV show Landline! Day 2 will be our snake-handling course (#OzReptileAcademy) on 12April. Such a great opportunity to get evidence-based information about snakes into the public discourse 🐍❤️

Hi all, I made a 90s accessible video compiling the case to #SaveWoogarooForest (>420ha remnant forest) from destruction (to build 1800 homes). Extremely bad plan from enviro and endangered species perspective, but also regarding liveability. Pls watch and share widely, thx 🙏 youtu.be/gxIuHWkKdJk

Live in SE Qld and concerned about land-clearing, endangered species, liveability, or excessive traffic in the region? Come for a community event- we’ll discuss all these timely issues. I am looking forward to speaking at this event & helping lead + change. www.eventbrite.com.au/e/environmen...

Are snakebites on the rise in Australia? Here’s my live ABC news TV interview on the subject. youtu.be/zH7DT0HnOj0

This! Ever had a snake removed & assumed it was good for the snake? As in, a conservation tool? Prof Gavin Smith et al’s tracking research shows the snakes ⬇️ weight, become disoriented, move more, & sometimes die. An important service, but perhaps just use sparingly. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

In this live ABC Radio interview (9min42sec) recently, I was asked about why and how I teach people to handle Australia's highly venomous snakes. Curious? Have a listen! (or come back here later during your commute 😜). #OzReptileAcademy youtu.be/5eRd2C1c5qY

Australian governments are failing to conserve biodiversity, meaning their extraordinary values are being lost and global conservation targets will likely fail. The next federal government must do better. My letter with @biodiversityguy.bsky.social in @science.org. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This stunning palm cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus macgillivrayi) is just one of the more than 2000 listed threatened species in Australia. Alarmingly, this list continues to grow, rapidly. To learn more about the amazing palm cockatoo and its conservation check out @cnzdenek.bsky.social's work!

What lives in this forest that is planned for destruction? 🌳 471 plant species 🦜130 bird species 🐭 80 non-avian vertebrates 🐨 3-6 koalas (Endangered) Qld has >1000 species threatened w/ extinction. Let’s not push them closer to the edge, & instead follow 30 by 30 agreements (30% land saved by 2030)

167 hectares of remnant forest in SE Qld is on the chopping block, set for destruction. Here, I provide expert comment on the short-sided, backwards plan. Please add your name to the petition (bottom of the article) if you agree, and repost this. www.ipswichtribune.com.au/ipswich/1530...

“With everything so seemingly terrible these days & no sign of anything remotely hopeful in the near future, I thought u might need this photo of a…” baby Eastern Pilbara Spiny-tailed Skink (Egernia epsisolus) 🤓.

The Grass Lily (Murdannia graminea) is looking particularly vibrant in our locally-native habitat garden. For Southeast Qlders looking to support our declining biodiversity (>1000 threatened species in Qld), this individual’s seedlings are available at Indigiscapes Native Nursery in Redlands 🤠

We bred our Woma Pythons and the sweet little babies are adorable 😍🥹. Do u agree? #AspiditesRamsayi #OzReptileAcademy

I am enjoying Eat the Invaders on ABC. Good to see widespread attention being brought to major environmental problems in Oz. They just forgot to mention in the rabbit episode that Woma Pythons help too by eating feral rabbits too! 😜🤓 (Tracking research by Dr Melissa Bruton showed they eat rabbits)

One of my best mates is hiring, and I would highly recommend working for her! This is an ethical environmental consulting company in the beautiful region of Cape York Peninsula, specifically Weipa. Pic of our #OzReptileAcademy snake training she gifted her staff. Job: nrmjobs.com.au/jobs/2025/20...

My live ABC News interview recently re #snakes and #snakebite. I took the opportunity to promote the simple 1st-aid treatment for snakebite in Oz that saves lives: the Pressure Immobilisation Technique. Always have a stretchy bandage on hand!

A 35% increase in ‘000’ calls for snakebite in NSW last year has prompted a media story. My snake photo and expert opinion are featured in ABC’s online article today on the story: www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01...

The live Death By Birding podcast from the @birdlifeoz.bsky.social Galah event is now out! It includes my interview (see pics). A few of us had to step in at the last min to replace @hugepossum.bsky.social & Judith Hoyle whose flight was delayed. Tried our best! Episode 31: www.deathbybirding.com
