Undocumented immigrants have provided an extensive source of unregulated, readily exploitable labor. If we’re going to drive them out, we’ll need an increased cohort of desperate citizens to replace them. We don’t know how to run an economy without slaves.

As many people in the comments have already explained, it wouldn’t make sense, nor would it even be something they could do.
However, I agree that those considerations don´t explain why no one in Congress has proposed it.

You´re probably screwed if you need support... but one advantage to being neurodivergent in another culture is that they can’t tell if you’re socially dysfunctional or just American.

If we get through this, I hope we learn it, too. For core social systems, we need to figure out something more resilient than “either it works by very rich people competing to see who can make the most money, or it depends on the government not getting nasty.”

Telling someone to suffer and die because treatment would impinge too greatly on the insurance company’s profit margin demands the human touch!
I am disgusted by insurance companies, but the underlying problem is inadequate supply of medical care. We’re barely even thinking about that.
