Regular everyday folks are gonna love spending $175 billion on something that won't matter if it doesn't work. Especially since we're already gonna spend $140 billion on missiles that also won't matter if they *do* work.

I just think it’s hilarious that people went to college with the Pope. “What’s Ken up to these days? Partner at a law firm outside Pittsburgh, that’s nice. And Bob? Oh, he’s the Pope.”

India and Pakistan are fueling each other's extremism—and veering toward catastrophe—without an off-ramp in sight, Vaibhav Vats writes:

The Atlantic wins the ASME 2025 Best Cover Award for our October 2024 issue. Inspired by the visual language of old Ray Bradbury and Stephen King paperbacks, Justin Metz created this illustration—among the only covers without a headline or typography in our history. https://theatln.tc/o0BM860L

Thrilled that our rather prescient October issue has just won the ASME award for Cover of the Year.

Apart from … ALL THE THINGS shaking up assumptions about geopolitics right now, this is amazing and would otherwise be headline news: apnews.com/article/japa...

In addition to her expert mousing, Lily is investigating reports of Soviet propaganda

I remember when the Dow was over 40,000. It seems like it was just a few months ago.

Trump is imposing a 10% tariff on the Heard and McDonald Islands. The Heard and McDonald Islands are uninhabited.

A reminder to reporters: Because Trump tariff numbers are made-up nonsense, using the phrase “reciprocal tariffs” is lying to your audience. The phrase itself is propaganda. They are not reciprocal.

Anyway, here's Lily snarfing treats

But I know what love is, Jenny

This is the kind of thing Trump can do even if he can't pull us out of NATO. He can render our membership in it almost trivial by using his Article II powers.

This is significant.

Replaying #Fallout 4 with some of the new content. It's a nice graphic upgrade and while some of the new content isn't that wild, it was fun to drop a Minutemen artillery strike on an Enclave camp.

Lynn and I are disagreeing about where this would go, but I want one. She, oddly, does not.

If movies and television have taught me anything, it's that I can totally outrun an explosion.

I've watched Administrations go from DEM to GOP & back & forth. Even during worst of times in our country we didn't see career employees resign en masse. Especially not from being told to do so. This is what authoritarian regimes do. Brain power & experience loss will be devastating for decades.

October 27, 1962, was arguably the most dangerous day of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a day when human error, rushed preparations, aggressive tactics, and sky-high tensions could have set off World War III intentionally or by accident at least four separate times. Here is what happened (a long thread):

One Russian paper today: “Assad’s fall confirms the indisputable fact that the percentage of votes won by a dictator/autocrat/usurper at an election before he falls means absolutely nothing. None of that ‘95% support’ came out to defend him.” #ReadingRussia

Beautiful submarine cable and long-range wireless map (1930s)

No undeserved praise No obeying in advance No normalization No sane washing Just calling out a failed businessman, exceedingly corrupt president and convicted criminal for what he is And-although you left out the $454 fraud judgment and sexual abuse verdict Well done, @vanityfair.com

Umm this bus stop bench in Seoul is heated and has free public wifi. So luxurious ✨

“In Assad’s abandoned office, his desk and floor were littered with books and papers: a history of the Russian military, a map of northeastern Syria, a biography of himself. Strips of antianxiety pills were in their packaging on the desktop.” www.wsj.com/world/middle...

This is very interesting. Call to de-escalate? Gift link "Russian General Calls U.S. Chairman of Joint Chiefs" www.nytimes.com/2024/12/04/u...

When the Russian government paper features headlines like “Panic attack for Russia’s currency market” you know there’s a problem. Today’s Russian papers focus on the falling rouble. One paper notes that “news from the currency markets resembled reports from a war zone.” #ReadingRussia

Putin has no real options for nuclear use, no matter how hard he thumps his chest. And the history of nuclear crises - and there aren't many - is not that they happen because one side has decided on war, but because of miscalculations that have to be walked back. www.reuters.com/world/europe...

Performed in waters off the south coast of England, the activity showcased the Herne XLAUV in an operational ‘vignette’ designed to demonstrate an ISR mission.
