I wish Emily Cochrane would explain what she means by “mythology”. The piece is about the very real history of Carter’s affect on Atlanta and there’s nothing mythical at all. It’s an insightful piece and a fine chronicle but for that curious word choice in the first sentence.

Economic diplomacy pays you back. If the US doesn’t help Africa, China will. Russia will. Aid opens markets and creates alliances. It influences the course of their development.

In his own version of events he admits to drunkenness, adultery, fornication, and coveting another man's wife yet evangelical christians avert their gaze and zip their lips? His poor judgement and a lack of self-control disqualify him from leading a Boy Scout troop, much less the US military.
