"We're not even going to ask for a good approximation, literally anything even close to good will do. Just very, very roughly can be fine." bsky.app/profile/iris... /4

Oof. The bits underlined in red are best understood to be accompanied by hand-waving, eye-rolling and a tone of "yeah, sure buddy, here's your magical flying pig, we'll say that exists". bsky.app/profile/iris... /3

This posts use of "magically and at no cost" is so scathing as to be almost plain text. "Non-neglible probability" means ~ "noticeably better than chance, as in the AI gets things right often enough for it to be not just lucky coin flips." bsky.app/profile/iris... /2

Specifically, we define & analyse: a) what reverse engineering is in the true case & as adopted by cognitive scientists; b) true reverse engineering: Chinese porcelain reverse engineered by European alchemists & Jesuit missionaries; & IBM’s System 360 reverse engineered by the USSR (Table 1); 2/n

c) how reverse engineering of substances in its appeal to correlation and structural similarity appears as if it provides the right frame (pink column, Table 2); d) how we treat mind as substance or as computer, mixing and matching to suit rhetorical ends in violation of computationalism; 3/n

To tease problems out, we use the cognitive map (a proposed theory for mental representation; although, see Table 1 for deeper analysis) as a case study and show how it differs from other related scientific concepts (phenomena and theories) and why this matters (Boxes 1 & 2, above). 2/

Yes, kudos to @stevenmweisberg.com for inviting you and organising it. Shows the interest to get so many people to attend at quite short notice - a good sign for the field hopefully.

“We believe that healthy universities are a backbone of a thriving democracy. They promote critical thinking, independent research & informed debates. The planned cuts threaten academic freedom, innovation and equal access to education. A weakened university system means a weakened democracy.” 5/n

“The strike is directed against the politics of education budget cuts. Not directed against our employer, the university. We are striking in protest against a government that wants to push through historic budget cuts that are unnecessary, unwise, undesirable and not legitimate.” 4/n
