Today, the Government launches plans to fast-track driverless vehicle trials in the UK. One of the companies involved says London presents a big challenge: “It has seven times more jaywalkers than San Francisco.” Except… it doesn't. 🧵

"She saw the red flags, trained the people now dismantling democracy—and stayed silent too long." This is a great article. How the domestic illusion of security (that 🇬🇪 could never be Russified) got us where we are in a record time - and how Western money trained and enabled the dictatorship. 1/

"Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” has $185bn for ICE, which is more than the annual military budgets of the UK and France combined. Wherever ICE raids trigger protests, Trump can send in the troops." My column. www.ft.com/content/3d6c...

Saw John Wick yesterday (for the first time). I think it would work better if they were all vampires

Every national government should publish a "Haynes Manual" for how to do things like power of attorney and related things that a citizen only typically has to do a very few times.

Yay got Worldle on the first go (yeah it was a very easy one)

NEW: Likely cuts in UK funding to the Gavi global vaccination group would damage soft power and could make Britain less resilient to infectious diseases, as well as causing avoidable deaths among children, leading vaccine and aid experts have warned. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

I was older than I should have been when I realised the truth about ‘non-lethal’ - it a) can mean torture equipment b) lowers the bar on police violence and therefore escalates situations c) can be lethal anyway if someone’s unlucky www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Some actual good news here. Labour will announce £4.5bn funding for schools - and make a move to bring more disabled pupils into mainstream education (and reduce gifting a load of the SEND budget cash to specialist private schools). observer.co.uk/news/nationa...

One of those times where it's necessary to point out that drafting the ECHR was led by David Maxwell Fyfe, a Scottish Conservative MP for Liverpool, MacMillan's Home Secretary and a prosecutor at Nuremberg. A functional party would trumpet it as a great Conservative achievement in the rule of law.

🧵 The BBC has long played a vital role in creating epistemic stability, a sense that facts are verifiable, disagreement has boundaries, and news has standards. That’s not trivial. It’s one reason the UK hasn’t yet experienced full epistemic collapse.

Oooh, you mean it's OK to leave, realise it's a mistake, then rejoin? 😉

Good Local Government is not cheap Good local government isn't cheap. If cheapness is the only goal, we might as well abolish all local councils and have direct rule from Westminster. However, this approach would ensure that local and regional governments are genuinely accountable to their voters,…

The short-lived Andrew Eldritch/Beastie Boys collaboration project from 1986, now deservedly forgotten.

I can’t understand, after the last 30 years of it happening EVERY TIME, how people think AI is going to stay free Once everyone’s reliant, it’ll cost a fortune we just “have” to pay Its energy needs will cost us the only world we have All so someone doesn’t have to write their own Reddit shitpost

This is why Clydesdale should just put pictures of horses on theirs

Someone in one of my Discord servers shared this zine by Ruth Pearce, "But What Can I Do?": How to Fight the Trans Panic. It's UK specific but if you're in the US I still highly recommend giving it a read and printing out a few copies. ruthpearce.net/2025/05/26/p...

Reform’s head of DOGE has also quit in solidarity with Zia Yusuf, reports PolHome’s Harriet Symonds, in a display incredible commitment to waste cutting

Lib Dems react to Zia Yusuf’s resignation as Reform UK chairman The party’s deputy leader, Daisy Cooper, said:

My favourite @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social tool for understanding public opinion on climate is now available for the UK! 🇬🇧 Find out how many people in your area are worried about climate change, have experienced its impacts, support action from the government and more. The answers may surprise you!

New, from me: A Brown student built an AI-powered harassment machine of university staff. When the university investigated (and cleared) him, he was presented as a free speech victim. He became a right-wing celebrity, which was his goal all along. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/how-to-bec...

I think the word "important" is overused when it comes to the publication of words. It should be used sparingly. This new piece of research from @teraallas.bsky.social and co-author Dimitri Zenghellis *is important*. www.productivity.ac.uk/news/mind-th... It explains weak UK productivity. 1/

Hi, I'm currently looking into the impact of the PIP cuts on carers for the Big Issue: I'm interested in speaking to anyone receives PIP *and* Carer's Allowance, and who is potentially at risk from the new "four point rule" please repost for circulation

Yet another example that so much tech is someone trying to recreate a mother/wife/girlfriend. I think I'd find this so much more compelling if any of these "mundane tasks" put the perspective of caregivers and carers first. So many of the most important things in life are very mundane.
