These bastards.

The injustices being heaped on Kilmar Abrego Garcia are many things, but among them: they're a cover-up.

Exactly. A plague on BOTH their houses...

Job! Outreach coordinator, Texas Field Station Network. This position will also put you in collaboration with the UT natural history collections, and, by association, me. But don't let that deter you.

Your reminder that Humboldt Fog cheese, Humboldt County, CA, the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti),and the Humboldt Current that allows wine grapes to grow in Chile are all named for an 18th C gay scientist whose love letters were all burned and who left his entire estate to his “valet.” 🏳️‍🌈

Great letter calling out all the harm from journalists. “Often in mainstream media circles such as yours, trans journalists are considered “biased” by their very existence, while anti-trans cisgender journalists are counted as “unbiased” and “critical thinkers”, even when they behave unethically.” 👏🏻

This seems like a great day to remind Bluesky that Stephen Miller lived four doors down from me freshman year And our student council person asked him (and everyone) to sign a birthday card for our dorm’s janitor And he threw a tantrum and wrote an op-ed about not socializing with “the help.”

We could just house people instead.

Herculean collation of >12K megafauna tracks, >100 species, reveals 75% overlap of critical habitats with shipping, fishing, pollution or warming. Protection targets not enough to safeguard megafauna. New paper in @science.org, led by @anammsequeira.bsky.social 👇 📸silvana-palacios,daniel-torobekov

you do not, under any circumstances, "gotta hand it to elon musk”

if the budget cuts go through for nasa, we’re losing juno, which has given us these gorgeous images of jupiter over the years

10/10 great legwarmers

While I'm writing heat threads, common meds that will screw you up in the heat include stimulants for ADHD, SSRIs, SNRIs, diuretics, and ACE inhibitors.

A reminder that “America First” is a Ku Klux Klan slogan.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

There are a lot these sorts of "tricks" in the draft budget which are merely nonsense collections of words meant to elide the fact that they intend to shut down facilities. "Turn off half of LIGO..." "Reduce Greenbank by 70%" "Reduce Gemini operations by 50%" "Sell Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo..."

Someone else said something very similar to this the other day, but. It really burns me that our (millennials') generation was legally terrorized for like, downloading Radiohead discographies But we're supposed to be ok with billionaires stealing human intellectual output in its entirety bc AI

NASA’s iconic Goddard Institute for Space Studies—home to Jim Hansen and hundreds more scientists, creator of the GISS model and keeper of the global temperature record—has been evicted from its longstanding NYC office above the “Seinfeld” restaurant. Why? The government told them to move out.

Probably because it is 😆

Trump's Budget is out. For NOAA, it's exactly what the previous passback document showed. Trump administration eliminations NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research in its ongoing fight against science and reality. www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/...

On the anniversary of their births in 1911 and 1922, respectively, remembering the lives and work of Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, both internationally famed for their skilful depictions of cinematic villainy. Masters of their dark art!

Nighttime shorebird work! Long, cold night, but great birds and great views Lots of Sanderlings, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Rex-knecked Phalaropes, and Stilt Sandpipers 🪶

Look at how the laws against robbing banks just devastated that once growing industry!

What people don't seem to understand is that even if *they* are not using Medicaid, a large share of their providers' patient population does. That means that their healthcare providers may be unable to stay solvent and in practice when Medicaid is cut. We all lose when Medicaid is cut.

“Each part of NOAA plays a role in monitoring, understanding, and predicting how the environment in which we live, work, and play is doing, and how it affects each of us.” Dismantling NOAA would be bad for weather forecasting, bad for our economy, and bad for public health.

What could go wrong

Dear science journalism, Please start including the funding source and whether it has been imperiled by the coup in your coverage of cool new science papers. The public should know the floor is being cut out from under us.

Mexican cannonball jellies is so surreal they look almost fake, with a chandelier-like mouth and deep blue color. But this species is also the target of an active & largely unregulated fishery, which collapsed around 2017. But recent posts from citizen scientists provide hope of a blueberry comeback

Every Harry Potter book or shirt you buy directly funds the persecution of trans people. There's absolutely no excuse to support anything Harry Potter anymore unless you hate trans people.

bringing my piss license to the portaloo having my groin card scanned by the wang bouncer going through the genome scanner to access the segregated wee stations all part of the extremely normal utopia we strive towards

tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

Jellies in space! These were really pretty jellies, but hard to photograph in the mass of sea sparkles. They have such fascinating tentacles. Is this one Aglantha digitale, @noncompliantcyborg.bsky.social?

Two views of a pelagic nudibranch. No idea what kind it is though! The rhinopores at the bottom are clear enough but I have no idea what any of the other bits are. Or which view is from the side and which from the top/bottom. Pics from Balayan Bay, Anilao #MarineLife #Invertebrates #Blacwater

It's no longer #WorldTurtleDay, but I like them so posting more Honu. :) Here's 3 hanging out on the reef at Ulua Beach. 📷🌿🦑🐍

1. It's Fustilarian Friday and today's drop is the "Restoring Gold Standard Science" executive order. My read is that this is designed to (1) protect far-fringe figures such as the antvaxxers now heading our health agencies, and (2) kneecap efforts to use scientific evidence in regulatory policy.

Took me a bit to process how big a deal this report actually is--its thus far the only review to look at the entire body of currently available research. It took two years to conduct, stands at 1,000 pages, and completely contradicts the Cass Review and the common arguments for bans on this care.
