Early detection can make a huge difference in patient outcomes. If you’re not sure if you should be screened, check in with your primary care provider and ask. For me, this only required a quick phone visit wi tbh them to get a referral. The procedure took 15 minutes… well worth it to know ♥️

Please consider making a donation to Fred Hutch Cancer Center in memory of my auntie. I am honored that her family wanted all funds to go directly to my lab 🥺 🧫
I couldn’t be prouder to be your niece. We are working hard on that cure every day - I love you, Auntie Yo ♥️

In 2023, my auntie visited our lab at Fred Hutch, where she got to share her journey with the lab, witness the research in progress, and meet the bright scientists behind the discoveries. This was a very special moment I hold near and dear to my heart.

Eventually, she achieved remission and was living life to the fullest. She served as a strong advocate for cancer research, participating in and leading several fundraising events and sharing her experiences openly. Sadly, her cancer eventually returned and had spread.

My auntie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 after a routine screening mammogram. After a bilateral mastectomy, she underwent an intense cancer treatment regimen, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy.

Programs are disappearing left and right. We need to be intentional about continuing to provide the support those programs afforded ourselves or risk losing exceptional scientists who deserve to be here.

When nominating speakers to give talks, be intentional about including scientists from disadvantaged backgrounds. Know a trainee from a disadvantaged background giving a talk? Can yoi help them prepare their talk? Send an email to offer!!

Can you offer to read proposals that scientists from disadvantaged backgrounds are working on to provide additional feedback or guidance? If so, let them know!! Send an email to say you’re available to help in any capacity.

It’s almost certain that transgenic models were used to identify treatments you or anyone you know who is affected by cancer receive.
We need to understand how things work to ensure they’re safe before they are used in humans. Preclinical research depends on transgenics. 🧵 4/4

Our research contributes to understanding how cancers arise, how they can be treated, & how we can mitigate damage cancer therapies cause to the body.
We use transgenic mice to study bone marrow transplants, blood cancers, & how the body recovers from radiation therapy. 🧵 3/4

Our lab has transgenic mice that make less of a specific protein we study… we were able to make these mice by introducing DNA sequences that allows us to reduce the protein amount in certain cells. This genetic “trick” has been used for almost 50 years.
Mkay, but why? 🧵 2/4
