I don't know exactly what it means that my quintessential early-adopter uncle is only halfheartedly talking about the potential of AI, mainly just because it's the new tech thing & he's the new tech guy, while my Luddite father is now using ChatGPT daily, but it feels both significant & not good

7. Plan those lessons. Write those reports. Write those emails and mark those tests. All these things are processes which change us. If there's no point don't get AI to do it. Just don't do it. Make time for humans to do the important things.

Big split primary to secondary?

I'm pretty angry about how these have been pushed on kids and families but once it's been done I don't think banning works as the kid has become affected by placebo and nocebo. I think the best position is "we won't facilitate this for kids who haven't got them already and here's why.."

One does not (with ease). When you see people using that red pin replying to a post, they’ve set up their own feed of posts they’ve replied with a red pin to. So setting up a feed to monitor your use of a specific trigger. Bizarre that they haven’t created the option to. Must be relatively simple.

Thanks @samgibbs.bsky.social for writing this - totally agree about in-house training being hugely effective. I imagine there’s not….but is there any research on what makes a good balance? Sometimes an external speaker or course can be hugely motivational, but in-house best at changing habits.

Madness at 14 without adult supervision must have been quite something! The place must have been literally bouncing.

Not bad! I still remember it well. It was the Nothing Left To Lose album tour - that and the albums before it are just brilliant.

Foo Fighters, in 2000, at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. A friend’s mum dropped us off and we went in without her. What a night! Dave Grohl did a drum solo, living his best Nirvana life.

It’s a good one! Sometimes it takes me weeks and weeks to find that quiet moment. Nicely timed bank holiday Monday moment for me today.

I would love to be able to get to a place of really effective instructional coaching. Thought the article on coaching that develops mental models was useful in flagging importance of mental models, and acknowledging complexities (eg vulnerability) my.chartered.college/impact_artic...

Ultimately, knowing your subject (pedagogical content knowledge esp) and knowing your students is key.

And of course we are always adapting - and the more expert we become, the more (conscious or otherwise) we adapt to make sure every student is making the best progress. Doing so for all students, inc SEND, can be tricky!

There’s still space for pre-prepared alternative resources of course, but they form a toolkit for you to teach adaptive. Many of us are nomadic teachers without a classroom, which presents an added challenge in having resources on hand - I am now thinking more carefully about having more with me.

Lots of replies match my experience - the way to guarantee marks in exams, sadly, is substituting before rearranging. I unleash them at A Level, but it’s a bit of an exam tactic 😭

Wales doesn’t have EHCPs and the analysis her by David Thomas is really interesting. open.substack.com/pub/thingsda...

That’s a fair point. Asking is fine - I suppose it’s incumbent on both sides of the conversation to have something in their locker to move along. Same as anything, ‘do you follow football?’ ‘No…’ Perhaps sensitivity of kids convo and some of the societal biases make that harder.

Either - most important thing for me is a compelling reason for wanting to work at the school and in the role you’re applying to. That’s often missing. One can also gather a lot about experience from the listing of work experience, so don’t always need huge lists of ‘I did X, Y’ in the statement.

In simple terms, we have more children and more children with need and are 12 staff less than we were 8 years ago. There is no capacity.

No change. Had a talk from an Oxb admissions tutor recently and (I’m paraphrasing, but) they said it’s just the same statement split into separate boxes.

Aghhhhgggggghh. I never watch these videos for my own sanity, but I watched this one. Blood slightly boiling. Also: “fake and gay” - there are actual adults who use this? I thought we’d moved on from this sort of rubbish. Might need to go for a run to cleanse my eyes/brain/etc.

To own a British railway ticket is to be rich these days, however!

It keeps popping up on my timeline so I suppose (combined with your review) it’s a sign that I ought to give it a go! I’ve gone non-edu so far with The Color Purple and now Africa is not a Country, but I am sure I can fit another in.

My thoughts are very much with you - always sort of saw you as a double act. Hoping all the kind messages and memories go some way to helping you through.
