I do hope that the European NATO delegates have a secret club room where they can really let rip about how much they despise Donald Trump... and brace themselves for another bout of diplomatic rimming.

🔴 Public Trust in Government Collapses to Record Low as Demand for Electoral Reform Surges New research finds record levels of support for a fairer voting system as trust in Government collapses to new lows bylinetimes.com/2025/06/25/g...

Aerosol transmission of SARSCoV2 virus is the dominant route for transmitting COVID-19. 👏'2025 Faraday Horizon Prize for advancing understanding of the physicochemical properties of exhaled aerosols, and their impact on transmissibility of respiratory pathogens.' @rsc.org www.rsc.org/standards-an...

New research shows that support for a fairer voting system has hit a new high. This rise in support is no surprise. For too long, First Past the Post has distorted democracy, and the 2024 general election gave us the least representative parliament in British history.

The government is at risk of losing next week’s vote because a) the policy is bad and b) the political operation is bad:

@natcen.bsky.social's new British Social Attitudes Survey finds record dissatisfaction with the NHS, and record numbers saying they struggle on their income Sir John Curtice tells PolHome's @nadinebh.bsky.social that Labour must deliver on these two issues to have a chance of retaining power

“Big long term questions about the size of the state and the economic model can seem like distractions to managing the immediate concerns of voters” Pity then that the PM doesn’t seem much interested in ideas and his Chief of Staff appears to be stuck in campaign mode. This won’t end well.

New post just out: "History Restarted: the radical right and the problem of "successful" autocracies." In which I look at the growing threat to liberal democracy from a new strain of capitalist authoritarian governments. (£/free trial) open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/h...

“We will have fund-raisers in the US, in Monaco, and we will have huge fund-raisers in the UAE, where we have an expat community there who are unhappy with the amount of regulation and tax in the UK.” Nick Candy Let’s not forget this…

Chaminda's work on the disability cuts has been invaluable. This shows that contrary to many media assumptions that PIP cuts are primarily around mental health - they would affect lots of people with cancer, heart disease, and numerous other physical illnesses and disabilities.

NEW: Labour's planned disability benefit cuts could affect the majority of current working-age claimants with ischaemic heart disease, inflammatory arthritis, hip and knee disorders and Crohn’s disease, according to analysis of new DWP data By me, for the Big Issue: www.bigissue.com/news/social-...

NATO summit: 'How far should one go to accommodate Trump, who makes no secret of his disdain for Europeans?'

Pressure is growing on the government as Sadiq Khan and Andy Burnham have backed the rebellion against disability benefit cuts

*NEW MONTHLY RECORD* Boston has moved up to 101F, the hottest June day ever recorded in the city (since at least 1872). #wbz

Brilliant. Martin Lewis destroying the defence minister on Good Morning Britain. ‘Minister can I interrupt you. You keep talking about getting people into work… but PIP is not an out-of-work benefit. I don’t know why you keep talking about getting people back to work’. #TakingThePIP

It’s time for #Fairvotes. A National Commission for electoral reform would determine the best form of proportional representation for the UK. @labour4pr.bsky.social @libdems4er.bsky.social @makevotesmatter.bsky.social

The fact we are making ourselves more dependant on US military assistance, not less, is fundamentally insane. We cannot rely on the US as a security partner, how obvious can that possibly be before the UK security establishment takes it in?

Keir Starmer tells Beth Rigby that 1/3 of Labour MPs rebelling against the Welfare Bill Is not a vote of no confidence And all I can think about is the shame of the other 2/3 of Labour MPs who think cutting disability benefits is a good thing - shame on them

If you don’t already follow Sunder, you should if you want a dependably level-headed, well-informed correspondent from the front line where mainstream centre right politics is submerging itself into sinister ethnonationalism.

Robert Jenrick has declared that he is an "Anglofuturist" today. It is not a phrase that many people will have seen in mainstream politics and the media. What does it mean? It may have two distinct and overlapping meanings to those who are championing it, such as the Anglosphere Institute

So he's no longer an 'Anglofuckoverist'?! I sincerely doubt that. 🙄

New post: A minimum tax on billionaires mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/06/a-mi... The very rich pay a much lower percentage of their income in tax than almost everyone else. The 'Zucman tax' addresses this problem directly in a way designed to attract the maximum popular support.

Who are these cuts meant to appeal to? Certainly not progressives. And certainly not pro-EU voters who know they wouldn't be necessary if we rejoined even just the Single Market. The only ones who can possibly find this good are the kind of billionaires and gammon who'll never vote Labour anyway.

Keir Starmer vows to press on with welfare cuts as rebellion grows. Wrong. Listen to the poor, sick, disabled; your backbenchers. Govt can cut corporate welfare, tax the rich. HMRC didn't collect £46.8bn of taxes last yr. We are all one illness/accident away from needing benefits Oppose the cuts

The NHS can't make us better when big business is making profit by making us sick youtu.be/uQA3jkqOXNQ?... From addictive foods to lifetime drugs, corporations are profiting from your ill-health, and the NHS is left to foot the bill. This is how neoliberalism is eating the state.

I think Chris absolutely nails it. Vote Leave deliberately weaponised the immigration issue in order to win.

Maguire exposes the hypocrisy of the UK govt in opposing proliferation of nuclear weapons & telling Iran it can't have them while we get more ourselves (nuclear bombs dropped by aircraft). He also points out we're spending £200bn on our new nuclear deterrent! #welfarenotwarfare

For me as lay person this looks like the UK increasing its military dependence on the US, a regime that is openly allied with Russia. As usual, Starmer chooses Trump over Europe. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

“Britain to buy US jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons” I just wonder in what possible scenario would they be used? We already have nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles. Plus do we want to be even more dependent on America?

Exactly this

Former Sec Def Austin does not address the fundamental problem: European allies have real reason to worry that Trump could use dependence on US systems as leverage in a crisis. on.ft.com/3ZMItAa

UK - a founding member of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty - buys jets that can carry nuclear bombs. We buy the jets - estimated £60m each just to buy the basics - the USA provides the bombs and tells us what we can do with them bit.ly/3GdJPNF

DAILY MIRROR: Government drags its feet on Post Office scandal payouts, leaving victims in limbo as damning report reveals insufficient action to secure justice for the wronged. - by Dave Burke

The increasing normalisation of nuclear weapons is deeply dangerous & sends message to all other countries that security depends on acquiring weapons of mass destruction. Oh & the bombs are owned & use controlled by US alone. What could possibly go wrong?

Great write up of @stuarthoddinott.bsky.social’s new report which shows local authorities have been forced to ration access to publicly funded care. This has created a damaging geographical and demographic ‘care gap’ Full report here: www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/...

The question is not whether the welfare bill is unsustainable, the question is why make savings via the sick and disabled rather than other routes.
