It survived the hot water durability test. The surface detailing did come off with some scraping though. I however discovered that they bevel the edges when gluing it together. This provides tooth for the urushi to stick. I am now using a diamond burr to work the fractures.

Mixing flour with titebond makes for a lightweight, tacky, but very durable dough for gluing stuff together. After a day it can be polished and smoothed. After two days it's even harder.
I can see this useful for mosaic artists.

Titebond three is rated indirect food contact safe. It is safe to use on wood spoons that make direct contact with hot food. It's just not rated for long term persistent food contact like can lining, etc.
This was a cheap bowl I bought from an Asian market.
