Why do you hate my alma mater so? ( #TheU )

I'm not sure Democrats have much believability these days when they try to be champions of the working class on issues like Medicaid cuts. I mean, on the merits, yes, Dems can still be that party. But on the optics, Dems look like the party of college-educated elites lecturing the working class.

Well, not *all*the signs are in place. Obviously, it'd be worse if Trump actually went forward with sky-high tariffs instead of just the 10% + policy uncertainty we have now. We're probably overdue for a recession anyway. I mean, we've gone four years (the entire Biden Admin) without one.

Is the poor quality of US economic data a long-term problem, or is it something attributable to #Trump Admin policies?
comment in response to post
"[T]he panel found that the Admin would likely prevail on the merits." They didn't merely rule that California hadn't cleared the high bar set to secure a temporary injunction (e.g., that the *state* is substantially likely to prevail on the merits)? Sounds like the 9th swung the other way entirely.
comment in response to post
You say the 9th Circuit didn't determine what the test should be, but it sounds like, in context, at least, the panel holds the test is whether the acts "significantly impeded" the ability of federal workers to faithfully execute the law? I haven't read the briefing or opinions, so I'm just askin'

Omg. I had to click out of it *immediately*.

Her fears are absolutely legit, and I don't mean to diminish them (I'm Jewish, and we also have reason to worry in the Trump era, no matter how often Trump uses us as human shields for his repulsive policies). But I'd be more worried if I was an immigrant or LGBTQ.

Didn't Trump draw far more Black (and Hispanic) votes in 2024 than he did in 2016? Back then, it felt like white nationalists vs. the rest of us. This time, it felt ... different. I'm not saying she's wrong. But this election felt like toxic masculinity vs. the rest of us.

I said maybe foolishly!

I (maybe foolishly) assumed the USA would limit itself to bombing campaigns? That is to say, I didn't think we'd put troops on the ground in Iraq?

My daughter hates that I use AI because it's damaging to the environment, but I find it incredibly helpful in legal practice to, e.g., rephrase or punch-up language; shape a Westlaw search; do an initial review of or summarize documents. I do worry it'll replace many young associate positions.

Oh, the stories I could tell, lol.

Litigating against pro se opponents is the WORST.

Maybe he's afraid of getting arrested. I mean, there's a lot of wild-eyed speculation about the Trump Admin, where I [eye roll emoji]—I'm no conspiracy theorist—but do I think Trump would love to humiliate his opponents, especially the one guy who is above him politically this century? Oh, yea.
comment in response to post
Yes, agreed.

It's all context-specific. If Trump draws the line at dropping one of those bunker-buster weapons on Iran's nuclear sites and refuses to put troops on the ground, maybe we'll escape a quagmire. But that's an awfully big risk to take, and Arab states would, I imagine, rally around an attacked Iran.
comment in response to post
Why are they fleeing? That is, is it purely precautionary, or is a major Iranian strike anticipated and imminent?
comment in response to post
I'm shocked #Trump is even considering this. The one thing I thought he really believed was that getting the USA involved in a war would have no benefit for him and might ruin any possible legacy. I can't see how USA assistance here avoids a quagmire, and it'll rally Arab nations against the USA

Actually, you can draw a line stretching back even further, connecting Trump to Palin, GWB, Reagan, Nixon. Trump's appeal/worldview are mostly based on toxic masculinity. That's what propelled him to win in '16 and even more so in '24. He represents cultural pushback, after years of liberal progress
comment in response to post
I used to think Trump doesn't believe any of his bulls--t, but he has a surprisingly coherent worldview, which I think he developed in right-wing online swamps, and I increasingly think his core views (to the extent he has views) are genuine. So I don't think you can draw a line from Palin to Trump.
comment in response to post
I share many of @marcishore.bsky.social's fears, but some of her claims strike me as wrong. Imo, Sarah Palin's radicalism wasn't genuine. She was hastily chosen as a Hail Mary by McCain, and she wasn't prepared for a nat'l campaign, so she went with what was easy. Trump's radicalism is ... different

Well, aren't we now at tariffs with the UK that, outside of certain exempted industries, is 10% above the pre-Trump baseline, without damage to the US-UK relationship? If Trump replicates that with the USA's other trading partners, would that not be a valuable and legitimate "win"? Idk.
comment in response to post
You're probably right. Trump doesn't seem to have many ideological commitments that would guide him in situations like this, other than (a) be transactional and (b) bully weaker opponents when possible.

It's awful. I mean it is really unsettling to watch the parade of evil, callous, mean-spirited, ugly tweets and responses, which come in waves like in a tsunami. It's a cesspool there.
comment in response to post
I've seen you use this meme before about Trump's tariffs, arguing inflationary spikes and empty shelves would arrive in late May. It's now mid-June. I know Trump backed away from the worst of his tariffs, but we have 10% over prior baseline and so far ... no doomsday impacts? Did folks overreact?
comment in response to post
Haven't we discovered, with the 10% tariff he's put in place now, that many companies will "eat the tariff," at least to some degree, rather than pass it on to consumers? I'll have to dig for it, but I am sure I saw that analysis from one of the widely-respected corners (Joe Weisenthal, maybe)

I've never heard this before! Cool reinterpretation of the classic Foreigner song.

"A friend calls it my 'cleanse,' like I’m eating nothing but blended veggie shakes for a week, except for my brain." Okay, but add a scoop of protein powder to those shakes! You need to keep up your energy levels, for the difficult days ahead.

I have no idea if Bluesky is "dying" or not. I do know, now that I'm only over there on rare occasions, that Twitter is a cesspool where the most vile voices are amplified, and it's just venom and shitposting all day long. It's a nightmare world there; they can have it.

Good grief, this whole thing looks pitiful

Not only did they not show up, people left town to get away from him. I’ve never seen DC so quiet, and I spent the morning there.
