It is sad that even basic research needs to be defended with utility. For me, basic research is in the same category as art: civilized societies can't do without it, because we all want to know who we are and what our place in the natural world is -- questions that only science can answer.

Not sure what scares me more... the giant size of that TE, the fact that it carries along a herpes virus genome or the thought of an actual Teratorn.

In conclusion, we find that the species experienced multiple historic waves of TE expansions and the generated genetic diversity now contributes to the pathogen's evolutionary potential.

We tried to tie together the timing of a TE family expansion with potential adaptive functions. These could be linked to fungicide resistance gains or other pathogen traits.

A large and diverse number of TE families show high variation in copy number among populations.
The variation in TE numbers often tracks the expansion out of the pathogen's origin in the Middle East.
We then focused on the TEs showing the most dramatic recent expansions across the genome.
