But even leaving aside all the reactionary-centrist stuff ("be nicer to fascists," "cancel culture," people are going "too far" on trans rights, etc.) McArdle is actually pretty far right. With (oy) "libertarian" leanings. She's mostly an old-school Republican and very conservative.

The reason I'm not moved by "don't give them the pretext they're looking for" is that they'll turn anything into pretext. It doesn't matter what you do.

No. That wasn’t it at all. I have to mute you now as my nonsense tolerance has reached its limit and you’re just not a serious person. But a final note: you can complain about things, people, institutions without equating them with the most foul of their counterparts. Pol Pot was worse than Nixon.

I suppose you have a point. Liking Matt Yglesias and going to the same fundraisers with Republicans on one hand and, on the other, tearing up the constitution while also kidnapping people and literally murdering thousands, are pretty much equally bad.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this, as it is so breathtakingly stupid, but:

I don’t know about “offensive,” but it is gobsmackingly idiotic and irredeemably insufferable. It’s also psychologically revealing and evidence of total moral failure.

This (so predictably that I often can't help but see it as purposeful) ushered the most broken, most vindictive, and dumbest people in the country straight to the heights of power. If the reactionary centrists weren't reactionary, or didn't absolutely dominate the media, this wouldn't be happening.

It's because they are more culpable than even MAGA is. We've always had backward morons, bigots, conspiracy theorists, rage cases. But only in the past few decades did we come to decide that what they had to say was just as valid as what anyone had to say. It's now the default approach, everywhere.

Lead story in the WSJ, WaPo, and NYT apps: The action (tear gas; protests) but not the reason (dictator says so).
WSJ and WaPo right down the middle with the who, what, where; “Tensions flare” is doing a lot of work here in the NYT.

Caveat: I guess depending on what's going on here, it might not have been stupid at all:
