Yup, already all over that. I’ve put together quite a bit for the launch and beyond. What’s annoying is not having the proper support needed to get the book into the hands of reviewers in time to make the lists for what books to look forward to etc. But I’ll figure it out man, I always do. 🤓

This stuff is key to us being able to weather the current climate. As for me, I’ll be fine, I’m too stubborn to give up 😮‍💨 This post Is just me sharing some of my thoughts and observations. 🙂

I’ll end this thread positively by acknowledging those who continue to show up for books by diverse authors and illustrators. Thank you. Your support is invaluable. I’m also noticing more and more of us supporting each other and collaborating on events to maximise our reach & combine audiences.

I’m fortunate enough to have a good few projects lined up for the years ahead, so even though I’m anxious about the landscape, I’ll be able to weather the storm. Even so, I don’t relish the thought of putting out work that I’ve slaved over in this current landscape of publishing & entertainment.

While I haven’t actually had anyone say this in my presence, I trust my sources as reliable and the volume of these stories alone is proof that something has shifted for the worse. This isn’t only happening with books, I’m seeing it in the film and TV arena too.

I’ve been hearing stories of books being rejected because according to certain publishers “DEI books aren’t selling” (don’t even get me started on the incorrect use of DEI), and agents telling their Black and Brown talents that “nobody’s accepting Diverse books at the moment”.

It’s a trip to go from each book being wildly anticipated, to relative silence for this upcoming one. I also suspect that it’s cos the author isn’t UK based, which leans into my issues with this industry being author biased. That’s another story tho.

These last couple of years I’ve witnessed the 180 flip when it comes to this industry and its support of books by Black & Brown people, but it’s one thing to witness it from the sideline with no books out, & another to experience it first hand.

So coming back was already a bit anxiety inducing, but getting ready to release a book to what feels like silence is actually making me question the point of working in this industry.

I haven’t had a book out in two years, partly cos I’ve been figuring out some things and also because I needed to rest and recover from being severely burnt out.

And each time I post about it, people are surprised cos they’re seeing it for the first time. 🫠 I’m actually tired man. 🙃

I’ve also put together a little something exclusive for indie bookshop preorders, just to show love for stocking my books. If you’re an indie and you’d like some sticker sheets to go with your preorders, just drop me a dm or comment below and I’ll hit you up and sort it out while stocks last.

So much work has been done to raise awareness about this over the years. It shouldn’t be happening so frequently anymore, especially with picture books. You know you didn’t make that image, so why is it so hard to remember to tag the person who did?
