I think it’s about the possibility of control over a handle. People were spooked after the bird shit the bed. It was the first major platform migration a lot of younger people has felt.

I still think the friction of setting up a self hosted instance is holding it back. It’s harder to set up an identity that’s linked to a domain.

I think this misses some nuance. There are a lot of people who are annoyed with the way 2024 got rolled out. It was supposed to be this great "next step with what you know" and turned into a massive money grab that sought to drown out other ceatives.
