[Food, egg fried rice] @skinnylatte sometimes it takes a while for people to figure out they're trans. 🥰

@mayintoronto 10/10, no notes.

[Food, laksa] @skinnylatte that looks delicious, and also its the color that nature says means "danger".

@sleepy62 @jerome @mayintoronto we may be talking about two different things here. If you are using a hosting provider with a web interface, you're not self-hosting. You're using a provider. Self hosting starts with like `sudo apt install postfix`

@jerome @mayintoronto today it is, because of mail delivery issues. We'll see what tomorrow brings when Google gets split up.

@mayintoronto yeah, the solution that makes sense in my head is having personal email hanging off the domain, but professional website. Like, my work email is always going to be provided by some other entity, whether that's an employer or my own business name or whatever. But, I might want like […]

@mayintoronto I've personally had better luck keeping the custom domain stuff just for personal things. For a while I had the email address [email protected] forwarding to my work email, but nobody ever used it. I would definitely say go separate domains for professional and personal. It's not […]

@mayintoronto own domain and self-hosted are two very different things. I'm actually in the process right now of moving my personal domain email off of Google and onto Proton. I'm not interested in self-hosting my email, but I do love the freedom of using my own domain. I've had the same […]

@sakhavi are they smooth? Slow? Jock-like?

@hacks4pancakes do you think it will go...😎...straight out of there?

@mayintoronto this is the most cursed shitpost and I'm loving it. 🤣

@mayintoronto the most recent o11ycast episode legit had a guy who apparently specializes in vibe coding, but he hates the term vibe coding and prefers "augmented coding". He thinks the next generation of coders will be doing things "we can't even understand". He also thinks nobody cares about […]

@aronow going to Philly. My wife is graduating from grad school and we're going up there so she can walk.
comment in response to post
@aronow not too bad. Going on vacation next week so I'm in "wrap things up" mode.

@aronow those claws are srs bsns. Love 'em!

@mayintoronto I feel like this is the point where we need Jeff Goldblum. If you can get posts inside the bsky world via completely non-bsky methods, what stops somebody from posting all the Nazi or CSAM shit they can think of in a way that bsky admins can't ban? Like, I don't see how the next […]

@mayintoronto I feel like the greatest trick the ownership class ever pulled was making people believe the management class isn't the working class.

@mayintoronto I hear there's good fishing in Quebec, but also Les Hiques.

@mayintoronto your brother has an uncanny understanding of politics.

@juliette reminds me of the "how many steps will it take the royals to cross the cathedral at Elizabeth's funeral?" nonsense.

Me: "Why is there a person eating poutine and singing O Canada in that parking lot?" Passerby: "Oh that's @mayintoronto. It must be Tuesday."
comment in response to post
@mayintoronto wait, weren't you comfy in bed earlier? How did you end up in a Canadian Tire parking lot? Canada is weird. 🤣
comment in response to post
@skinnylatte if the dude wasn't flooding his back yard to grow the rice was it really even "first principles"? 🤣
comment in response to post
@juliette unfortunately, the answer is "yes". Either is valid, and different manufacturers use different measures. Sometimes it's end-to-end on the leather, sometimes it's end-to-last-hole, sometimes it's end-to-middle-hole. That particular vendor is crazy […] [Original post on alvarado.social]

@hacks4pancakes I believe something may have gone horribly wrong with that ship. It appears to have parked in a shopping center. 🤣

"Caring about the code is supposed to be what you do to earn being here and I refuse that. I cannot be Technical because I put my caring, my hope, my love, and the center of my universe somewhere else." Her words, my reason why I've never worked in big tech, don't want to work in big tech, and […]

"In some systems otherness causes smartness to dissolve because otherness is more useful to the system than the smartness." Replace "smartness" with "humanity" and you get the recipe for making big money in big tech. This is the reason FAANG treats you as a user, not a person. Again, Dr. Hicks […]

"The Technical needs to exclude women in daycares, women in cafes, women in grocery stores and now even women in labs in order to continue its own existence. It needs to be separate from all other areas of work in order to get different rules for itself. After all, objects do not suffer."

Big tech is late-stage colonialism.

Ooh, now she's taking like a Black academic and I am *here for it*. "The whole thing was designed so that people trying to solve my kind of problems with my kind of tools would never be good enough. I will never be good enough for Technical people no matter how good I ever am."

"Tech is immensely global in its activity and so fanatically geo-located in its employment that even the most senior and most unquestionably Technical people worry about moving away from 2-3 certain US cities." Tech's a mo-no-cul-ture *clap clap clapclapclap* (I'm not saying anything Dr. Hicks […]

Need more proof? From the same article: "Your theory has to ask why, so your theory has to include repair." Does that sound like...hmm...maybe the very core of software engineering?

@skinnylatte next question, how fast can you do it in an office chair? Follow-up, if all your work friends start at the same time, who makes it there first?
comment in response to post
@mayintoronto yep. And for anybody who though AI was going to be good for us, this right here has been the plan all along. You don't get a job a CEO can be convinced a LLM could do instead.

@mayintoronto productivity you can't steer, apparently.
