He wrote a whole romantic novella for her (Fanny, his second wife), which she didn't like, but eventually married him anyway. They had several kids over 20 years, and she inspired imagery in several of his works. He couldn't write for years after she died, and definitely never got over her death.

He was so badly burned trying to put it out that he couldn't attend her funeral -- which took place on their anniversary. 😢 (I used to be an English teacher, so I learned it in college.) (Also, she was his second wife, as his first died due to complications of childbirth.)

So, he must keep doing all the things that he's been doing all along that you ignored while stirring racist fears about him.

Great shot of Paul Shaffer leaving the venue, though.

I was wondering about this. All the articles I see are about IU. Has there been Purdue coverage? Is the same thing happening at ISU and Ball State?

Big fan of a nice hors d'oeuvre selection.

Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life," first date with a preacher's daughter. So awkward. (But still a great movie!)

Well, when you put it that way, it seems kinda bad.

I'm struggling to imagine where it could have come up with "Oribe's Hill." Am I missing something? Also loving the idea of "cement-ery" hill!

Thomas Hutchinson was great(?)-grandson of Anne Hutchinson, and long-time ally of Franklin's, having worked together at the Albany Convention. Betraying his friend was not one of Franklin's finer moments.

Last year we stayed at the attached hotel while my wife was working in London. The whole place is just gorgeous (as are all the main old stations). Enjoy your visit!

That's unfair. Cotton and his ilk will have LOTS of shameful legacies!

I mean, doesn't everyone who's working for him know that?

The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery & American Art Museum have a joint multimedia installation by Sir Isaac Julien called "Lessons of the Hour" which uses three of Douglass's speeches mixed with re-enactment, period photos and modern footage. It's phenomenal, and stunningly current.
