Do all the Tough Guys feel safe yet?

Worth a read: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/25/o...

Most of the ideas mentioned in this article—higher minimum wage, free tuition at public colleges, higher taxes on the rich—are not only popular now but were realities in the past, including in NYC, during the booming postwar years, when America was “great.”/1 www.nytimes.com/2025/06/25/u...

Philip Bump is an insightful journalist: wapo.st/44zuWyC

Even with all of the important caveats, Mamdani’s win was a blow against the old Democratic way of doing things — and against the old Democrats who run the party. Gift link: wapo.st/44zuWyC

ICE needs to be reigned in:

This thread is worth reading:

Taxes should not be cut.

This is so so so so corrupt. Why any institution is willing to negotiate is beyond me — why anyone thinks they can make a real deal is baffling. It’s corruption all the way down.

University presidents need to hold the line.

The news media have normalized a president brazenly lying every day. Decent people are appalled, and that should include journalists, but instead the media have accepted lying as part of the game.

Here’s the thing, the right has been exceptionally good in recent years at courting a populist base, mostly through bullshit and hate. When the left tries to make inroads through policies that might actually make people’s lives better, that’s a threat to their new base and, essentially, their power.

I spent most of today seeking to meet with one of the many victims of ICE raids currently jailed in Downtown LA. While @chrclla.bsky.social focuses its efforts on impact litigation, my team boosts efforts on the ground whenever possible. What I saw speaks to the crisis in LA & beyond.

Thread. Because not enough people understand this. Medicaid is a lifeline for pregnant women, children, poor, disabled, veterans and the elderly. If its decimation doesn't impact you now, it will when your senior parents need it. Or your kid serves our country and comes home less than 100%...

"This isn’t just about Ukraine. It’s about whether borders mean anything, whether alliances matter, and whether the free world will defend democracy, or let it be erased."

Truly horrified by this order in way that is deeper and darker than I have felt over many truly awful merits decisions.

“In his efforts to demolish and disappear Black culture and the institutions that support it, Trump has made a loud admission: if he truly believed that Black culture were inferior, he would be leaving it on display and intact. Its mere existence would prove white supremacy.”

There are way too many things to be upset about these days, but I believe the destruction of public lands should be near the top of the list: www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

“Today’s ruling is a massively important one—and a massively worrying one, insofar as it at least appears to reflect the willingness of a majority of the justices to appease a government the behavior of which is increasingly unworthy of any such respect.” www.stevevladeck.com/p/161-the-co...

A federal officer cannot be “doxxed.” The public has a right to know who is operating in our government, especially if they have the power to imprison someone.

Mike Lofgren was one of first to diagnose structural collapse of GOP. (Book 'The Party's Over,' 2012. Same time as Ornstein/ Mann 'Let's Just Say It: Republicans are the Problem') Now he argues it's time to use 'totalitarian,' rather than 'authoritarian,' for MAGA era www.salon.com/2025/06/22/a...

The media needs to focus on the truth.

Harvard must not cave:

I just want to say for the record that when the history books are written centuries from now, I believe the election of Donald Trump in a free and fair election in 2024 will go down as one of the most senseless and self-destructive own goals in human history

Really disagreed with Robert Kagan 25 years ago, about attacking Iraq. Really agree with him now, about attacking Iran. www.theatlantic.com/internationa... Including the last line. On countless fronts, it's a time to be counted. A time to choose sides and stand up.

Prof Epps (law prof, among his other accomplishments) knows what he is talking about.

And a jury.

And millions of people accept this as normal and not a sign of a significantly disordered personality.

Grim story on history repeating: Last time it was Japanese-Americans being shipped off to camps in the AZ desert… www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Once again, the great tragedy of the war in 🇺🇦 is that it could be over now had 🇺🇸/🇪🇺/NATO/the G7 flexed its massive economic power, quickly & in full, & destroyed 🇷🇺's economy & ability to continue fighting, back in 2022-23. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

If international relations teaches us anything, if there's a practical takeaway from decades of research, it's this: The confusion and fear generated by uncertainty in militarily-heightened moments is where a lot of bad happens, and responsible leaders should reduce uncertainty where they can.

This framing is beneath contempt. The Christian right and MAGA launched an unprecedented assault on the civil rights of a tiny minority and successfully weaponized the pseudoliberal establishment - led by the NYT - to provide it with a medical controversy pretext that doesn’t actually exist.

Our president is a cruel & dangerous joke everywhere in the world, but in the US where our Corporate Media & Centrist Elite treat him as serious person.

Just because one party is made up of fascists does not absolve us of the responsibility to hold the other party accountable for its inaction, neglect, dismissiveness, or lack of courage and strategy. That means holding Democrats accountable.

Thoughts on Israel’s Iran Campaign and Donald Trump talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/thoug...

Inasmuch as the Trump admin has any consistent tactical approach to policy, I think they just get up in the morning and say to themselves, what’s the most evil, destructive, and stupid thing I could do today? Then they do it. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/u...
