years of being called a tory enabler and told to "sit at the kiddies table and let the adults speak" by supercilious Guardian readers so insulated by privilege that politics to them is just a game of sneering one-up-man-ship. Weirdly they've all been rather quiet of late.

Just because someone is poor, or from a rough area, or "poorly educated" does not mean they are inherently some kind of racist moron, in the same way that just because someone is rich & well educated it doesn't mean they are thoughtful or progressive. Shouldn't even need to be said but here we are.

Out of curiosity do you guys play Hardcore UFO's live? That's one I've never been able to nail the chords for and feels hard to get right vocally. Seems like Bob doesn't do it live very often either.

Definitely. A big part of transition from digital (not that I ever used anything more advanced than Audacity) was getting used to that aspect of not being able to fix stuff in post (though the effects loop on my Tascam can be useful for that during mixdown) & just getting stuff right in the moment

..the clarity of Bob's voice in those kind of recordings is something I definitely struggle to replicate. But I think that's as much a testament to his power as a vocalist as it is to their recording process, but it's hard to get that sort of upfront sound without it clashing with the music a bit.

..I try to double-track vox too whenever I can but obviously that's limited by the format. It's definitely got me thinking a lot more about stuff like mic proximity too. Think I have a tendency to mix vocals a bit too low sometimes tho, which might be a confidence thing...

..I think that probably doesn't work in a digital context but something about the way it hits the tape really punches things up. Also feeding the mic through guitar pedals for compression/reverb/saturation. Recording with the meters in the red can work well too. And sometimes going through an amp...

My "studio" is a tiny, cluttered terraced house bedroom so the room sound is something i don't have huge deal of control over. A lot of it is just trial & error but I've picked up a lot of useful tips reading about GBV like turning the high end EQ all the way up & rolling the bass down to zero...

Cool! That's something I'd love to hear when it's done. & yeah Bob's vocals seldom fail to impress, especially on B1000. Particularly considering how hard it can be to get a good vocal sound on a 4-track with that kind of presence. One of the things I've struggled with most recording in that way.

P.S. a bit of a tangent but you're the vocalist in Voided By Geysers right? Been watching some of the live performances on youtube and really enjoying them. Never had the opportunity to see GBV live but think you do a great job of capturing the ethos and energy of the band. Awesome stuff.

haha. I guess being kind of an opinionated tit is sometimes a necessary mechanic of music criticism. And it's not like I can pretend I don't have my own sneery attitudes to bands like RHCP, Staind etc and their fans.

That's a good point! I guess it just kind of flies in the face of my general attitude towards music, particularly a band like GBV where it feels like a lot of that "fucked-up" side of their sound represents a reflection of their surroundings and backgrounds to an extent.

Ah of course! That makes sense. I just never put much thought into it. I'm not super familiar with Christgau but that somewhat word salady, sneery style of criticism just always comes across as a bit off putting to me. Seemed like he's judging the audience more than the music.

Christgau right? haha! That quote stuck with me from reading Closer You Are I think? I still don't even know what "pomo" means if I'm honest though.

how do people get to his age without developing a single iota of media literacy, capacity for critical thinking or ability to see through the most flimsy, transparent, boneheaded scams imaginable? Just immeasurably pathetic and embarrassing.
