Just when you thought ProQuest Ebook Central couldn't get any worse, it's now abandoned actual page images in favour of making books look like Word documents without page numbers.

Really interesting that @samcoatessky.bsky.social used AI to analyse his morning podcasts, caught it miscounting the number he'd uploaded, and then found it hallucinating an entire extra episode in order to double down on the lie.

Look forward to a raft of dramas in which good old-fashioned coppers spot the wrong’un in the first episode, get them soundly banged-up, and then drop by the lefty lawyer’s house to break the news that their client has fallen down the cellblock stairs. Cut to laughs all round in the station canteen.

It’s just, I do actually remember MOOCs. And NFTs. I remember when the UK government was going to start issuing NFTs. It was less than 3 years ago. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

It’s actually a good idea to sign up with 11 companies in AI. That maximises the chance that at least one of them will still be in business in 2030.

The Troubles should be a grim warning about the capacity of a modern state to tolerate endemic brutality, for decades, as long as it’s confined to certain people & places. But then, it’s not actually as if the USA needs any lessons in that…

Feels like my whole childhood and adolescence we heard about people maimed and killed by "rubber" bullets, official denials that "nonlethal force" kills people and wrecks lives, more evidence that it does, concluding with 'oh ok it actually does', and now the US is about to start the same cycle

Otherwise known as england

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a very expensive boot stamping on a human face, forever, while a voice screams “Help me! Help me! Help me kill it before it breeds!”

The Turing test is a trick.

If you’d like to observe the imaginary nature of money in practice, read this story and try to identify what her “worth” actually consists of.

So much disinfo

Holy crap, how is that even possible?

Paging Senator Ernst, please pick up the white courtesy phone...

Remember, these are some of the most privileged people in the country. Completely embedded in the political/media elite. Dinner-party guests of ministers and think-tankers. Palling up with people who want to ban abortion, and bleating about “sex-based rights”.

Ya think, Pinterest?

“How can we get through to people who’ll believe anything, as long as it’s a racist lie?”

OTOH any business or org sticking its head above the parapet in the current climate to say "we welcome everyone and we ain't policing toilets" is going to get crucified in the press. Whose fault is all this? Labour's. Craven quisling cowards that they are. Again: time to nuke the EHRC.

A cis women's rugby team played a trans women's rugby team and won 34-7. Naturally, Oliver Brown, who likes that his job gives him free reign to attack women, is not pleased, perhaps because he's spent years telling us how shit cis women are at everything

Fuuuuuuuuuuucked.

Just the most fantastical drivel. Like they rolled up Asimov’s collected works and smoked them. There’s something so badly WRONG with all these hypers.

While this is interesting, I really want to see more precision in reporting around advanced software systems*. They don’t “understand” things, and there are significant differences between how they work and how we do. *Yes, the acronym is ASS and yes, I’m a child.

To evaluate Terry Moran’s comment that Stephen Miller is “richly endowed with the capacity for hatred,” I recommend this oral history of his time at Santa Monica High School. lamag.com/politics/ste...

Really Cool how nobody wanted to take this shit seriously

Mail on Sunday - "Victory for Darlington nurses in hospital changing room battle" "Now, with their case heading to the courts, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has intervened, ordering Darlington Memorial Hospital to give the women their own room." [Mail] They were given their own room previously.

Another great example of how GDP as a metric rewards the most harmful behaviour.

In a popularity-contest between a bullshitter and a pessimist, where fact-checking has been banned, who’s going to win?

Remember that eugenics, a rising menace, is more than racism, it seeks to justify all inequality. Its adherents will interpret this finding as a vindication of 'meritocracy'.

This is the thing. The Tories deliberately started making this an expensive problem about 2018. It wasn’t one before. They literally made it one.

This is pretty solid take I think but it seems that journalists en masse seem most attracted to disgusting right wing tech billionaires who actively hate the media and want to destroy it? Just sell bsky to Zuckerberg or Musk and they'll flock here unstoppably

It's depressing to have to highlight these "cold hard truths" again, but some myths are extremely persistent...

Later he’ll visit Barnsley, where he’ll pledge to reopen the pits. Wednesday he’ll be in Oldham, where he’ll pledge to reopen the mills, and Thursday he’ll be in Liverpool, where he’ll pledge to reopen the docks. Saturday he’ll be back in his London mansion.

I mean: how?

The Government said it’d cost £99bn to publicly own our water. But this drew on calculations by — drumroll — water company lobbyists. The true cost is closer to zero. Here’s why. 🧵

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

Let's not forget (because I'm sure they wouldn't want you to) that Greta et al made that trip to highlight the fact that Israel is a rogue state that breaking international laws unchecked. A fact that should have been obvious by it's daily murders of children.

Interesting: Despite the relentlessly negative media coverage, most people in the UK want to stay in the European Convention on Human Rights👇 🔗 yougov.co.uk/topics/inter... via @yougov.co.uk #ECHR #OurRightsAndFreedoms

“Quality” newspapers now just recycling essentially fascist messages of approaching doom.
