But 'an illegible series of bumps' would not be braille (at least not to a braille reader).

Agreed - there's always room for well-argued dissent. Since his poetry collection won the T. S. Eliot Prize and his first novel sold more than a million copies, I can't see any harm in kicking a man when he's up.

Not any kind of defence, but was he thinking of the 'rev' in 'Trevor'? But revving isn't the sound of an engine starting up; it's the sound of an engine that's already started up and is now... er... revving.

But braille is embossed, not painted. It can't be rubbed into being by wind. Are the windblown letters rendered invisible? By the wind? But can they still, despite being erased, be picked out with our fingertips? Do falling seeds ever make the sound of an audience clapping?

Is this taken from the latest Ocean Vuong novel?
comment in response to post
Surprised at how many heavyweight literary admirers he appears to attract. I find his poetry lacks any interest or distinction, and I bailed on the first novel after a dozen pages. He clearly needs a hands-on editor, but seems to be doing very well without.

Never figured out how or why Ocean Vuong was shortlisted for the Eliot Prize in 2017, let alone how he won it. But I was completely untouched by his poetry, despite my best efforts. Given the ferocious LRB review it's unsurprising that his novels sell in their millions.

Christ on a Bike - Orla Owen Birding - Rose Ruane The Unheard - Anne Worthington I know you already know most of these! The last-named debut novel was my 2024 book of the year: review31.co.uk/essay/view/1...

Mornington Crescent's 'Curtailment' variation means that no player can ever reach Mornington Crescent itself as all routes are blocked and only U-turns are possible. The game, once started, can never be completed.

yes! 'Heart of the Angel' by the great Molly Dineen (who has now retired from film-making, I think). Would love to see this again, and espcially the cheerful women who sweep the tunnels after the last train has gone.

Haven't been therefor many years but may re-visit as it seems the brand is being rebooted, the restaurant upgraded and (as you say) it's now run by the T. Rex of catering. A fun place for hungry (non-vegetarian) kids also.

The roast suckling pig might meet your needs, but the rest of the St John menu is more restrained (and wonderful beyond measure). I suspect an Asterix-style hefty meat-based feast is more likely to be found at Bodean's in Soho bodeansbbq.com/soho/

I mean, how hard can it be? This notice might make sense to the initiated (i.e. drivers and managers) but not to the travelling public unfamiliar with the practice of 'curtailment.'

Worth a re-visit.

This prompted me to look online and at the moment the only versions I can find both have Spanish subtitles. The first (poor quality) here: vk.com/video2847727... The second (far better quality) appears to be part of a porn site! noodlemagazine.com/watch/284772... Proceed with caution...

Ach. But you'll now it's available online. Worth watching, and more than once.

I'm pleased to hear that! Did you manage to see it yourself?

You really should. It's marvellous. See also Mary Ellen Bute's astonishing and under-rated film 'Passages from Finnegans Wake' www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGNh...
