To answer Luke's q: Astra was herself the segment, Kroll wasn't. The segment was "the symbol of Kroll's power" which a squid ate, & mutated into the Kroll monster.
That's why when the segment transmuted there was squid left over, & why the 6th segment became Astra again, but Kroll wasn't remade. :-)

Yeah that's a really good point. Survival turned up - perhaps as much by luck as anything - as a perfect place to continue the story in other forms, and then the TV Movie gave it a new Doctor and set up just when it needed it.

Oh I think that's right. The problem is that we the audience *know* a whole lot more, so the Doctor's prevaricating makes him look foolish, and slows the story down.
I find it amazing that in a 6 part story he doesn't actually start impersonating Salamander until nearly the end of part 5!
