Right, as opposed to say, Norway, which is as reasonably socialist as any US locality is likely to ever be - but these folks can’t scream “we’ll be like NORWAY!!!” and get the same pants-shitting effect as invoking Stalinism.

Idk why but it *feels* like Verlander’s been so much worse than he is. The ERA isn’t great but it’s far from terrible - yet it seems like every time I tune in to one of his starts he’s just getting blown up

It’s like a less funny version of the Robin Williams/Sally Field dynamic in Mrs. Doubtfire, except if RW was locking people up without due process and gutting the public sector instead of throwing messy parties with zoo animals in his living room.

“Liberation” implies that the countries were made free. How many of the countries the Red Army “liberated” after WWII were thereafter free to choose their own leaders, criticize their governments, or align with non-Soviet powers?

Ukraine replacing one imperial power (Nazis) with another (Soviets) does not make the Russians heroes or liberators. Russia has spent centuries suppressing Ukrainian culture, language, and autonomy; that didn’t slow down during the USSR period and hasn’t since then.
