I think if these times have taught us anything, it's that we can no longer rely on consensus! (Also Ringo IS underrated)

Deeply transparent behavior by the NYT. The reporting is great, but the paper allowing itself to be used by the admin to icepick a guy when it's convenient for them to be insulated from him is craven.

it's also pretty cost efficient to spend like $700 or whatever and have like an oud and a bassoon and a whole array of reasonable decent string sections. the brass still sounds terrible.

I gotta say I use it almost every day. When you have to compose over a wide variety of instruments, it has extremely decent versions of a lot of things. That said - I don't use it on my records, only on commercial stuff.

In what universe is it too expensive for the daily newpaper of a major American city to just fucking pay some kid to write this? Instead, you outsource it to some slob who then uses AI? Absolute clown shit.

I also attended street fairs and went to Oak Street Beach and Taste of Chicago and talked to people and pulled real quotes. It was fun.

Full disclosure: in the summer of 1988 (!) I wrote articles like this as an intern on the city news desk of the CST. I wore a suit every day and met Irv Kupcinet and a rookie Richard Roeper and saw my first dead body.

Any idea why you're supposed to turn your lights off and keep your foot off the brake? Seems counterintuitive

You wrote the absolute hell out of this. The thing that AF always sold at the center of their work was sincerity; replacing that with schmaltz isn't just lame, it's a repudiation of what made them interesting!

I think there's a chance Houston runs them out of the gym(s). Seems like a lot of youth and length for them to handle!

Why do you insist on jamming this guy's vile opinions down our throats over and over? Just put him on staff, cowards!

This is incredible work, and your inclusion of "Livin' Astro" pegs you as a person with exquisite taste.

Worth noting the relative framing by NYT/Wired highlights the soft capitulation of our legacy newspapers. Not ideal!
