5 more days left!

I had a *great* time talking with the Davids on this one. We go into the history of ev psych and human mating research, current debates in the area, and where we'd like to see the field go. I had so much fun. I can't recommend the podcast enough. I'm already looking forward to next week's episode.

I'll be the first to complain about the problems in our field. But #HBES2025 is consistently the most inspiring, invigorating, and entertaining conference I attend. So great to see old friends, make new ones, and see students thrive. I'd go twice a year if I could. Can't wait for Morocco.

I really wish I wasn't so used to being this disappointed

Episode Three is UP! Controversies in Evolutionary Psychology! This is one to listen through to the end. See (some of) you at HBES! youtu.be/vtJlNgsSymw?... podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c... www.podbean.com/ew/pb-fexyz-...

We often have to judge who is knowledgeable—precisely when we are not. Can humans really do that? Our new paper in Psychological Science shows that, surprisingly, we can. drive.google.com/file/d/1b15E...

Come see me at HBES this week! I'll be talking about my work with @dconroybeam.bsky.social simulating mate choice in Nepali arranged marriages. Saturday at 9:50.

We have a lovely new paper out, showing that even ignorant people can be very good at recognising who's knowledgeable based on minimal cues

Just finished listening to episode 2. Dave and David are cooking up good stuff!

A new podcast, @epthepod.bsky.social: Actual evolutionary psychology by actual evolutionary psychologists. In the first two episodes, the hosts, @davidpinsof.bsky.social and @dpietra.bsky.social, interview each other 🧪 www.youtube.com/@Evolutionar...

Yet more reasons to admire Colin

Really enjoyed the discussion in this first episode. Looking forward to the rest!

Excited to be on this panel at HBES this year. If you're planning to come, submit a question at the form in this thread!

Lazuli Bunting season

Looking forward to this!

"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."

Amid all the other news, it's easy to become inured to the basic facts here. Öztürk: -Is not accused of committing any crime -Is nonviolent -Was in this country legally -Merely engaged in speech that the administration objects to -Has been locked up for six weeks

BREAKING: NSF has frozen all grant funding, as of yesterday. It's unclear when they will resume funding awards, or why the pause has been put in place. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

📢 Today I was supposed to be in DC, highlighting what the NSF Social, Behavioral, & Economic Sciences delivers to US taxpayers. NSF had one of the highest returns on investment (ROIs) of federal grantors 👏🏻 (1) and NSF SBE funded 63% of US social and psychological science research (2). 🧵

I really enjoyed this conversation with @thedissenteryt.bsky.social. Check it out!

Our students in DEVO are incredible. Creative, hardworking, ethical. They do it for the love of the game but we want to endow an award to recognize their contributions and achievements. If you would like to help us, please consider making a donation!

Want to make nice graphs with me, starting this summer? I am hiring for two PhD positions at the University of Witten/Herdecke.

🚨New paper! I tackle a confound in mate preference research: Are preferences & standards driven by one's own sex or target sex? Two studies show preferences are (mostly) driven by own sex, but overall standards are driven by target sex. Full paper: doi.org/10.1177/0956... #MatePreferences #Research

A small bright spot in a dark time: finally saw my first Mountain Bluebird

Many great insights here: "[Margo Wilson's work] gives us a particularly successful example of how you can bring evolutionary understanding to social science topics and be genuinely constructive; rather than just irritating people and inflaming the same old boundary hurts."

What kinds of questions are people asking these days in graduate student zoom interviews? I'm worried "Will you be a good graduate student?" might not get me the answers I'm looking for
