Making comics may be hard. But it’s like how a good video game is hard. You want to do the difficult thing because it’s also fun and satisfying. And the bad thought in your head get louder if you don’t.

This was half of how I learned to draw the draped figure back in art school. The other half was that Joe Kubert got sick of hearing me whine and told me to 1. get a big Sears catalog and 2. get a pencil and copy it. It was very Mr Miyagi, but it worked. bsky.app/profile/heli...

the only thing that will make a DC/Marvel crossover comic worth it is if they square up the Fantastic Four against Darkseid and his oomfs on Apokolips

Samurai Jack is a classic. And it's fueled by its rich images -- the backgrounds, animation and visual storytelling. Genndy Tartakovsky was sick of dialogue. He wanted to take a risk on a visual series, and Cartoon Network supported it. We explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-visual...

People are often surprised that I keep my day job in tech despite doing so much work in comics and education. Quite frankly, things like what happened to Peter David are why. Comics are wonderful and I love working in them, but they do not provide for a stable future. I don't want a GoFundMe.

a terrible thing about the last ten or twenty years of comics is seeing how many massive talents are still with us and in poor health, dying young, forever freelancers that gave their physical health to make things that now fuel the biggest blockbusters ever. It’s not right.

When you see the inevitable Marvel paean to beloved credit Peter David, remember that they continue to make money off of his work, but left his family scrambling for GoFundMe donations for half a decade.

the Peter David news getting to me kinda bad wont lie

Very sad news. A terrific writer and a wonderful guy to hang out with. A loss for us all.

Peter David's wife is reporting that he passed away last night. A versatile writer of comics and prose who adapted well to many characters, he had been having severe health issues for a while. I am glad that he was around, and wish the best to those who knew him.
