I loved this duology and am looking forward to reading Immortal by the same author. The celestial kingdom is so beautifully described by Sue Lynn Tan that I’d happily come back again and again.

The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut. I’ve come back to this book several times.

Death Plays the Guitar is my debut novel. 50 years ago, Malcolm Coyne made a deal he had no business making and now the souls of the dead cannot pass on to the afterlife.

What if music was the secret to helping lost souls pass on to the afterlife?

I felt this way too but chalked it up to me binging the series one after the other. Maybe if I had spaced them out or read them in isolation then I’d feel differently.

I really think the latter books are the strongest!

All of that aside, this book was well-paced, sexy, and touching. The juxtaposition of remote Scotland and Mayfair offered privacy when the story called for it but kept us engaged with the Gossip Girl-esque world of the ton.

If you’re coming into the series from the show then you might be surprised to know that the discussion on race, feminism, and sexuality aren’t present in the books. These additions are great and make the show itself interesting in a different way than the novels. Looking forward to Michaela!

I know that the showrunners have gender-swapped Michael in the show and I’m excited to see how that plays out. A huge part of his struggle and characterization is feeling as though he’s stolen John’s life and doesn’t want to steal Francesca as well. That obviously changes if Michael is a woman.

Penelope being Lady Whistledown is kept a secret from the reader until this book but since I had seen the show, this was spoiled for me (and everyone). Even so, it didn’t hamper my enjoyment, and I missed her contribution to the beginning of every chapter in subsequent books.

Colin’s declaration of love to Penelope in front of the whole ton was something I wanted to see in the show but alas, it didn’t happen. I’d say that Colin is the best character to roam in and out of other people’s stories and when it was his time to shine, he didn’t disappoint.

Yes, Gareth is the fourth (and final) love interest to be troubled with daddy issues, but it hardly defines his personality and ultimately that isn’t even really his daddy.

If the classic “betrothed to someone else” storyline didn’t have me hooked then using Aubrey Hall as the setting for the first half of the book and having Kate play a prominent role definitely did.
