I would recommend this when starting school, focus and take many life drawing/figure drawing classes, study animation and breakdowns on your own time and develop your own projects/personal studies to help your main overall growth.

I also want to add on to this because i know some will see it as a moment to validate their fears and i can only speak on my experience but even after all the heartache, i cant see myself doing anything else beside creating and i dont need to be with a studio to create, that comes from you.

Honestly had the same thing happen with me when I was applying and got hired as a manager for an art store and then getting a job at the local tech store

Shoot not just Walt being a manipulative dick but also the “nine old men” on being fucking scabs and creating more division as Disney loyalists.

Well before you move, i would ask this: "Is my work hirable?" and you have to be honest because i would say before moving make a strong portfolio and take classes because you are going to be competing for those same entry level jobs (most got absorbed into mid-senior levels)

Having samples or understanding japanese notation of the anime pipeline and finding PAs on twitter.

Its never too late to say, "until this shit gets it self together, i'm just going to step away". Even if i'm fortunate enough to get another industry gig (US) imma keep my retail skills (and that employee discount) on hand because i never want to put my full trust in companies to help provide.

In a way, it took me falling and feeling/being a failure that i remembered that if i want to thrive then i have to develop myself but also gamble on myself to learn new shit, but to also increase my skillsets from my main focus (storyboarding) with day work (sales/business) and animation.

Do it, venture out and develop new skillsets

Because having those convos with friends, you really have to ask "why the fuck aren't we doing this?" or "we don't have to wait for hollywood" and thats where i found myself now. Working retail, learning new stuff and working anime because i can't wait for hollywood for myself to be creative.

I personally don't recommend it because, fuck those turn arounds are crazy but also a great learning experience. I had to step back to realize that i have to find my own purpose from the industry and create what i want (animatics to simple animations) either by myself or with friends.

It wasn't until 2024 i said fuck it and got a normal day job and honestly it was for the best because that shit made me appreciate the time im given to create, retail isn't for me but a job is a job and i want to create. Shortly after i started working anime and learning how to animate as i go
comment in response to post
This shit ate at me because i thought i wasnt good enough, and honestly i still think that way because i do have room to learn and grow but it sucks that many wont be given that chance to grow from projects because they're literally bread crumbs being served to a buffet of people wanting their share
comment in response to post
I always thought i could just hop on another project no problem...well months went by and nothing came out, just more layoffs and sided convos of "hey i remember you and i'll keep you in mind" or "hey you were close but producer only wants 3 people out of state" or "you were so close"
comment in response to post
If im being honest, i gave up for a good proportion of time for finding work because after 2023 (A24) i was so burned out because I was fortunately enough to hop on projects to projects during the pandemic because of the streaming wars, looking back i did take this for granted
