—You don't have to be Catholic (I'm not) to be buoyed by last week's news at the Vatican. —You don't have to be Episcopalian (how I was raised) to be buoyed by Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde in National Cathedral on Jan 21. And by US Episcopal leadership this week: religionnews.com/2025/05/12/e...

This is one of the best ads I have ever seen and I can’t believe I missed it

No one ever thinks it will be them, until they’re the ones without due process

I really wish reporters would stop saying that there is an effort by the Trump administration to combat antisemitism. It is quite the opposite. There is an effort to foment antisemitism. forward.com/fast-forward...

🚨 BREAKING: Senator Cory Booker and Leader Hakeem Jeffries have begun a sit-in at the United States Capitol to protest Republican Medicaid cuts, Wisconsin tells employees to limit cooperation with ICE, and more. open.substack.com/pub/aaronpar...

Personally, I think it should be front page news for at least a month if a sitting US President is using falsified evidence to try and deny due process to a man who has committed no crime, but that’s just me

Not to state the obvious, but none of them were sent to a terrorist prison in El Salvador. They all had lawyers, indictment by grand jury, a trial or a guilty plea where a judge ensured it was knowing & voluntary & access to an appeals process. In other words, all the hallmarks of due process.

Five Harvard students or recent graduates had their visas revoked, apparently for exercising their constitutionally-protected right to free expression. www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

"No one, apparently, is willing to prevent a single man from destroying the world economy, wrecking financial markets, forcing this country and other countries into recession if that’s what he feels like doing when he gets up tomorrow morning" www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Seriously? Because we were told they were going to deport violent criminals.

German businesses heard a similar pitch in 1940. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Not joking: as of today Donald Trump is the absolute greatest destroyer of wealth the country has ever had

Trump has done the same damage to our health, environment and security as to our markets, it's just that there isn't a stock ticker that measures the impact so clearly

This is a longer "Week Ahead" piece than usual, but I hope you'll read it—I parse the details in two big deportation cases that come to a head this week. If you like analysis at the intersection of law & politics, sign up for my newsletter while you're there! open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

Don’t be overwhelmed Just do #OneThing each day to Build community Stand up against evil Love your neighbor Serve the oppressed Show compassion Advance justice Defend democracy Spread joy Today=not one but two art parties

In just two months, DOGE has —lost— the government an estimated half a trillion dollars. I propose that Musk pay it back personally.

One thing that most people are missing in the group text scandal: The Trump officials don’t appear clear on what *exactly* Trump approved, which is a huge problem in using military force. Stephen Miller says “as I heard it … green light.” 😱😬 www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/six-short-...

You cannot make this shit up. Sharing this jaw-dropping story with a gift link -- give it a read.

From an operational security perspective, this is the highest level of fuckup imaginable. These people cannot keep America safe.

Our decent into fascism is not inevitable but enough of us must see the signs. So much history that I never knew. I agree with a commentator that this needs shared far and wide and way beyond the progressive media bubble. substack.com/@thomhartman...

BRAVO to Maine Governor Janet Mills for slapping petty tyrant trump in the face with her calmly defiant "see you in court." THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE. 🔥🔥🔥

BREAKING: Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was arrested TODAY near the U.S. Capitol by Capitol Police. As Tarrio was walking away from a rally, he knocked the phone out of the hands of a heckler. Police immediately took Tarrio into custody. GOOD!

This was published last October www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

So they removed the black chairman of the Joint Chiefs in the middle of his 4-year tour, without cause, and they're seeking to replace him with a white **retired** Air Force three-star general who lacks the requisite experience as a service chief or combatant commander? Huh, how about that

@raskin.house.gov: "The whole anti-corruption crusade is an absolute fraud. They started by decimating the ranks of the inspectors general. These are the people whose job is actually, day in and day out, 365 days a year, to ferret out waste, fraud and abuse in the departments and the agencies."

The CFPB is one of the American people’s best defenses against waste, fraud, and abuse. Demolishing it will, of course, lead to more waste, fraud, and abuse.

Rate changes to NIH grants will cause undue hardshiphip to the University of Pittsburgh and communities. “U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley blocked the Trump appointees at the National Institutes of Health from implementing the rate change they wanted to apply to NIH grants.” Heather Cox Richardson
