Hello & HAPPY FRIDAY, as promised an open letter by my lovely colleagues and myself. Everybody, feel free to sign this even if you are not NL-based and ‼️ share ‼️ (anonymous signature is poss): Open Letter: Stop the Uncritical Adoption of AI Technologies in Academia openletter.earth/open-letter-...

Benioff says "50% of work now done by AI", and most media lap it up instead of realising what it means: that he understands neither "work", "AI", nor "%". If the singularity is near, it's not because machine intelligence surges but because we're giving up on thinking ideophone.org/bringing-abo...

quelle surprise that academia dot edu now offers AI slopcasts they were a garbage flattery service ten years ago, and they have turned up the enshittification a few notches ideophone.org/academia-edu...

one year ago, with Andreas Liesenfeld: Rethinking open source generative AI: Open-washing and the EU AI Act dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... apparently in the top 8 most downloaded #FAccT papers of all time we've tripled model coverage since then in the EU Open Source AI Index osai-index.eu

Straight to the top of my reading pile: Some of my favourite linguists @superlinguo.bsky.social, Hildebrandt & @suzyjstyles.bsky.social with a new paper on spontaneous multimodal iconicity in earthquake narratives doi.org/10.1080/0726... #iconicity #ideophones

Morgen #Klokhuis vragendag in science museum Nemo! Ik ben erg benieuwd. Hier een paar van de vragen die ik als taalwetenschapper mag gaan beantwoorden (met de leeftijd van de vrager tussen haakjes)

The amazing @marentierra.bsky.social @irisvanrooij.bsky.social Barbara M. & I build towards (sadly not obv to all): "Universities are not spokespersons for the AI industry. On the contrary, we need to resist being coopted and corrupted by the industries’ agendas." rcsc.substack.com/p/critical-a...

Gonna set this as my out of office in August

Our EU Open Source AI Index keeps growing and now includes >170 models. Sometimes, we find models that don't quite live up to the the openness claim. Blog post about OpenGPT-X by Dick Blankvoort and Jenia Jitsev: osai-index.eu/news/opengpt...

At our faculty we have guidelines on Generative AI and research integrity: osf.io/preprints/os... . Another example: ERA Living Guidelines european-research-area.ec.europa.eu/news/living-... I'm looking for other examples of guidelines like that, aimed at researchers. Hit me!

In praise of niche papers www.superlinguo.com/post/7845555... A blog post inspired by @dingemansemark.bsky.social I really enjoyed this exercise, please share those papers which are close to your heart and you're always surprised they don't get much attention!

The best LLM for education? Widely advertised "open" solutions like Llama are open in weights only, providing no access to training code or to the all-important instruction-tuning data. What to use instead? https://osai-index.eu/guides/open-llms-education

Ga toch weg met je door AI geschreven teksten — uitstekend stuk van Johannes Visser op De Correspondent decorrespondent.nl/16094/ga-toc...

Why synthetic text is incompatible with science blogging ideophone.org/why-syntheti... Delve away, dig yourself into a hole. I'll pass.

Bit embarrassed to be sharing this so late but I've been on parental leave... a short blog post explaining why this (not so) recent paper led by Stella Punselie & @dingemansemark.bsky.social offers a neat method to dispel some of the scepticism around iconicity: www.bonniemclean.net/news/2025-02...

I'm loving the hypocrisy of telling authors they can't share PDFs of their work with anyone and then sharing ALL that work with OpenAI without the authors' permission. Publishers need us more than we need them in this era...

New on the blog: Oxford University Press is going all-in on surveillance capitalism ideophone.org/oxford-unive... Turns out they don't trust authors with offprints anymore, citing "piracy" concerns, and would rather you didn't share your work at all where they can't track it #academicsky

Here, have some Magritte. He published this in La révolution surréaliste in 1929 ideophone.org/magritte-on-...
