It's straight out of Reform, the idea that the wicked metropolitan elites have been running the show in opposition to good honest folk- "The Anywhere worldview has dominated most Western societies for a generation, and populism is the Somewhere pushback. London is the capital of blue state Britain"

I bet they have no idea that they've actually signed up to a major climate change prevention idea, as there's a lot of research going into contrail avoidance measures

It's a gift for Reform. They'll be able to sound off about something that no one really wanted in the first place, while the real issues that could make everyone's lives better get pushed to the side

Incredible, there is no bottom

Given that they say that iPhone costs would triple if made in the US, it would be worth just paying the 25% tax (assuming such a thing, an Apple tax, is even possible or legal)

Actually sounds like Maduro in his later years

He was better prepared than Zelensky, because he knew it was coming (and it helps that Ramaphosa is a native English speaker).

Has one result of this been more traffic via the Middle East hubs? (Dubai, Doha, etc.)

I'm actually surprised it says the average is five. I had assumed it would be much less.

"This other party got loads of votes, so now I'm going to copy their policies to show everyone that they are right and that you should carry on voting for them"

There are nearly 20k newsagents nationwide, including every supermarket and train station. Millions of us are subjected to the screaming front pages of the Sun and Mail every day, even while not reading the actual paper. Over time, those messages from what are basically ad billboards sink in.

Pretty much. Didn't Farage once blame the mass of cars on the roads on the presence of too many foreigners?

Ah yes, it is

Also, we actually don't know *because it's never been tried.*. As sure as night follows day, every single Govt has cowered in front of the tabloids and figures like Farage. There's a case to be made that voters actually respect honesty and straight talk.

Few people who are in favour of a different tone on immigration are in favour of open borders or high numbers for the sake of it. As @iandunt.bsky.social says in his piece, what we want is honesty about the trade-offs. No more care workers? OK, so what's the plan to plug the immediate gap?

But it doesn't neutralise it. I'm seeing wall-to-wall Farage as broadcasters rush to get his opinion. It further propels him into the mainstream and suggests that he is somehow right. Farage is even out there gloating that Labour is panicking about Reform. This won't contain him, just the opposite.
comment in response to post
It won't even work. Farage is all over the airwaves today as journalists rush for his latest take on the issue. All this does, same as every other ham-fisted proposal before it, is further make the arguments of the immigration hardliners seem mainstream.

The response seems to be agreement that things need to be fixed, with a comment about making it easier to hire locals www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ce...

Great. Now - anything to say about the Reform lite immigration policies we've seen today?

His son (similar age and condition to mine) depends on the care sector, and now is the time to speak up. The so-far mealy-mouthed response is all the more maddening, because out of all the political parties, the LibDems have a core voter base relatively immune to the stuff put out by the Mail & Sun.
comment in response to post
Even the @libdems.org.uk , who have a core constituency fairly immune to the cr*p pumped out by the Sun, Express and Mail, seem to be mealy mouthed about this, not daring to openly challenge what's become political orthodoxy
comment in response to post
Not once have we had a government which is willing to openly state the benefits of immigration to our society and our economy, the way that diversity has made us a wealthier and culturally richer country. Not once. And yet we're constantly told that we've been living in an experiment of no borders.

Well said

The same BS narrative over and over, this time that there is some imaginary army of welfare 'scroungers' who we can pack off to work in care homes.

In Greenwich as well

There is nothing she can do or say that will appease Reform voters who are upset about hearing too many people speak Romanian on the street, or seeing too many brown people. All this does is open the door to demands for more and more restrictions. They never learn
comment in response to post
Yes - but, sadly in as much as people consume news, they'll be more likely to take the 'Brexit win' bs pumped out by the Sun and Mail.
